【英訳】侏儒の言葉14：幻滅した芸術家

本稿は芥川龍之介『侏儒の言葉』を英訳してみようという、連続企画です。もともと日本文学の作品を英語やドイツ語などの外国語で読みなおすのが好きだったのですが、芥川龍之介でいちばんお気に入りのこの作品には翻訳が見当たらなかったのがこの企画を思い立ったきっかけです。

Disenchanted Artists

A particular group of artists inhabit the world of disenchantment. They do not believe in love, nor do they believe in conscience. They reside in a dreary desert just as ascetics used to in old times, which might perhaps make us feel sorry for them. Nevertheless, only in the desert sky can we see beautiful mirages. Those artists, who have been disenchanted with all sorts of human business, in most cases, are not disillusioned with art. Rather, it is that they will immediately have golden dreams in the sky the moment they speak of art. They do have more blissful moments than one might expect.

幻滅した芸術家
ある一群の芸術家は幻滅の世界に住している。彼らは愛を信じない。良心なるものをも信じない。ただ昔の苦行者のように無何有の砂漠を家としている。その点はなるほど気の毒かもしれない。しかし美しい蜃気楼は砂漠の天にのみ生ずるものである。百般の人事に幻滅した彼らもたいてい芸術には幻滅していない。いや、芸術と言いさえすれば、常人の知らない金色の夢はたちまち空中に出現するのである。彼らも実は思いのほか、幸福な瞬間を持たぬわけではない。
