Exclusive Interview with a Translator for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games　　　 東京五輪の翻訳者に独占取材

After 17 days of exhilarating competition, the 2020 Tokyo Olympics drew to a close on August 8th with a splendid closing ceremony. Despite the continued spread of the coronavirus, all Olympic athletes put on a superb show in competing for gold. On a separate note, the numerous foreign journalists sent to cover the Olympics did not just report on the Games but also cultural and societal matters in Japan. However, I wanted to know what exactly people living overseas were interested in learning more about this year's Olympics. To find out, I spoke to Keiko Matsuo, who was one of the translators for the Games with over 15 years of experience in professional business interpretation. Born in 1963 and graduated from the Faculty of Literature at the University of the Sacred Heart in 1987, Matsuo has been working as a licensed interpreter for various business corporations and governmental organizations since 2009.            

2020年東京オリンピック競技大会は7月23日に開幕してから17日間を経て、8月8日に閉会式を迎えました。世界各国の選手がコロナ禍の影響にもかかわらず、金メダルを獲得するために全力を尽くしていました。一方で、17日間東京五輪を取材した来日の外国人記者が自国選手を中心に様々な試合を放送していただけでなく、日本の文化や社会についても取材しました。でも、私は海外の方々が今回のオリンピックに関して一体何について関心を持っているのか知りたかったです。そのため、オリンピック期間中取材活動を行う国内外のメディア向けの東京都メディアセンターで翻訳者として働いていた松尾圭子氏を取材してきました。昭和38年(1963)に生まれて、松尾氏は昭和62年(1987)聖心女子大学文学部を卒業しました。平成21年(2009)より現在英語通訳者として大手メーカーや大使館などで働いています。

Below is a transcript of the interview conducted on August 7th.

Q1: How did you become a translator for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics?          2020年東京オリンピック競技大会の翻訳作業にどのように関与しましたか？

About 2 to 3 months before the Tokyo 2020 Olympics began, I was offered an assignment by one of the private companies involved in the Games to work as a translator at the Tokyo Media Center, which was set up by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government. I officially started my job on the 21st of July, two days before the Games' opening ceremony. 

2020年東京オリンピック競技大会の約2〜3か月前に、東京都有楽町が設置した東京メディアセンターで、大会に参加した民間企業の1社から通訳の仕事を依頼されました。 開会式の2日前の7月21日から作業を開始しました。

Q2: During the 17-day event, what did you have to do every day (as a translator)?                                                                                                        東京五輪の大会期間中、毎日何の作業をしていましたか？

I worked alongside 60 people, among them fellow translators as well as independent journalists, out of the Tokyo Media Center every day during the Olympics. As a translator, I was responsible for translating a myriad of inquiries received via the online concierge from different local and international media organizations. Specifically, upon translating the inquiries, we would forward them to relevant authorities such as the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Organizing Committee and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government. Answers from the authorities would then be translated and sent back to the corresponding news organizations or journalists. 

私はオリンピック期間中、毎日東京メディアセンターから60人の翻訳者や独立したジャーナリストと一緒に仕事をしました。 私は翻訳者として、様々な国内および国際的なメディアからオンラインコンシェルジュを介して受け取った無数の問い合わせを翻訳する責任がありました。 具体的には、お問い合わせ内容を翻訳し、東京2020オリンピック組織委員会や東京都庁など関係各所に転送させていただきます。 その後、いただいた回答を翻訳し、報道機関またはジャーナリストに送り返されます。

Q3: How did foreign media outlets cover the Tokyo 2020 Olympics?          海外メディアが東京五輪についてどう報じていましたか？

Foreign media organizations, including world-famous financial news broadcaster Thomson Reuters, sent us many inquiries about things that were related more to the city of Tokyo than the Olympics. For example, we received an inquiry from a foreign media outlet telling us they wanted to run a feature story on traditional sports such as sumo wrestling, and that they planned to visit a sumo stable (the training quarters). We were also asked shortly before the start of the Olympics if athletes from Myanmar, a country that had been in political turmoil for months, would be participating in the Games, and who would be the flag bearer. Some other inquiries related to Tokyo received from foreign journalists were about the utilization of Olympic venues, including Ariake Urban Sports Park, in the near future, as well as the Tokyo Metropolitan Government's strategies for sustainable development of the capital. Some of the most interesting inquiries received included one from a foreign media outlet planning on running a feature story about Tokyo's tap water, which has been regarded as not only safe but high-quality. Additionally, we received media requests for information about specific ingredients used for food served to athletes staying at the Olympic Village and another one for trying on and shooting a story about a type of kimono called "Junihitoe". The said kimono is currently on display on the second floor of the Tokyo Media Center.

世界的に有名な金融ニュース放送局のトムソン・ロイターを含む外国のメディアは、オリンピックよりも東京に関連するものについて多くの問い合わせを送ってくださいました。例えば、外国のメディアから、相撲などの伝統的なスポーツの特集記事を掲載したい、相撲部屋に行く予定だという問い合わせがありました。また、オリンピックが始まる少し前に、何ヶ月も政治的混乱が続いていたミャンマーの選手たちが大会に参加するのか、旗手になるのかなどを聞かれました。外国人ジャーナリストからの東京に関する他のいくつかの問い合わせは、近い将来の有明アーバンスポーツパークを含むオリンピック会場の利用と、首都の持続可能な開発のための東京都庁の戦略についてでした。最も興味深い問い合わせの中には、安全であるだけでなく高品質であると見なされている東京の水道水についてを特集することを計画している外国のメディアからの問い合わせも含まれていました。 また、選手村に滞在する選手に提供する食事の材料や、平安時代の「十二単」という着物を試着して撮影するなどのメディアからの要望もありました。現在十二単は東京メディアセンター2階に展示されています。

Q4: Were there any differences in how foreign and local Japanese media covered the Tokyo 2020 Olympics?                                                               海外と国内メディアの東京オリンピック報道に何か違いはあるのでしょうか？

Unlike foreign media outlets, local Japanese media were more interested in matters related to the Olympics, such as the potential impact of adverse weather conditions on the Games as well as the Olympic flame. They were also interested in learning more about flood control and Covid-19 pandemic containment measures during the Olympics, as well as heatstroke prevention measures.                                                                                                           

外国のメディアとは異なり、日本のメディアは、悪天候が大会とオリンピック聖火に与える影響など、オリンピックに関連する問題に関心を持っていました。 彼らはまた、オリンピック中の洪水制御と新型コロナウイルス感染症封じ込め対策、および熱中症予防対策について興味を持っていました。

Matsuo has also been selected to serve as a translator for the Paralympic Games scheduled to take place from August 24th to September 5th this year. I hereby wish her all the best of luck!
