１９８２年に買った新潮文庫の文字は小さくて老眼の人には厳しい
スティーブン・キングというアメリカの作家が書いた、"THE INSTITUTE"（邦題は『異能機関』）という小説の翻訳が文芸春秋の単行本として出版された。
紹介文を見ると、この作家が５０年程前に書いた『ファィアスターター』を思い出させる筋立てだった。
手元に、１９８２年に出版された、スティーブン・キングの『ファィアスターター』が残っている。この新潮文庫のカバーは少し汚れたが、本文の頁の状態はそれほど悪くない。
しかし、活字が小さい。
これを買った当時は気にならなかったが、老眼になった今では、かなりつらい。
この記事によると、
戦後になってからの話に限っても、やはり今では小さい印象のある８ポイントの文字が、昭和57年までの長い間、新潮文庫では標準となっていました（昭和57年から8.5ポイントを、平成11年から９ポイントを、そして平成14年から9.25ポイントを標準使用）。
確かに、最近の新潮文庫は、『ファィアスターター』よりも字が大きくて見やすい。
新潮社は、文庫を読む人たちの高齢化を考慮したのだろう。
かつての学生層や70年代の文庫ブームによって、文庫で読書をする習慣を
身につけた人たちも年齢を重ねており、文庫読者の年齢層は中学生から老年の方までかつてないほど幅広くなっていました。
さらに、新聞の活字も各紙で大きくなるなど、一般的に大きな文字が求められる時代にもなっていました。
そしてその一方で、印刷・製本の技術進歩が進み、製作のコストダウンがはかられ、薄くて丈夫な安い紙も開発され、文字を大きくしてページ数が増えても、さほど価格には反映させずに済むようになりました。

もちろん、「大きい文字が読みやすい」と言っても、文庫が妙に分厚くなったり、ページあたりの文章量が少なくなってせわしなくページをめくるのでは、かえって読書の邪魔になります。
現在の新潮文庫が、数字上は中途半端な9.25ポイントという大きさを採用しているのは、その読みやすさの絶妙なバランスを狙って印刷会社にも協力をあおいで研究した結果なのでした。
また、過去の小さい文字の文庫については、新潮社は改版時に、大きい文字に切り替えているが、『ファィアスターター』は廃版になっている。
最近、各社の文庫の新刊広告を見ていると、海外小説の翻訳が減ったことに気づく。たぶん、買う人が減ったのだろう。
多分、他社からも、『ファィアスターター』が文庫として再度出版されることはあるまい。
いずれ、『異能機関』も文庫になるだろう。それまでに、『ファィアスターター』を読み返しておこうと思う。字が小さいとはいえ、まったく読めないわけではないし。
ただ、読者の評を見ると、『異能機関』は『ファィアスターター』をより過激にした雰囲気が漂うので、私好みではないかもしれない。

Of course, even if you say "large letters are easy to read", if the paperback becomes strangely thick, or if the amount of text per page is reduced and you have to turn the pages frantically, it will hinder your reading. The reason why the current Shincho Bunko uses a size of 9.25 points, which is half-finished, is the result of research aimed at achieving the perfect balance between readability and the cooperation of printing companies.
In addition, Shinchosha has switched to large fonts for small fonts in the past at the time of revision, but "Firestarter" is out of print.
Recently, when I look at the advertisements for the new publications of each company's library, I notice that the number of translations of foreign novels has decreased. Maybe less people are buying.
It is unlikely that any other company will publish Firestarter again as a paperback.
Someday, "THE INSTITUTE'' will also become a paperback.
Until then, I think I'll reread Firestarter. Although the font is small, it is not completely unreadable.
However, looking at the reader's reviews, "THE INSTITUTE" has an atmosphere that makes "Firestarter" more radical, so it may not be my favorite.
