神廟（徳川家康の霊廟）

At the end of the steep stone steps is Shinbyo, the mausoleum of Tokugawa Ieyasu.
急な階段を登り終わると、徳川家康の霊廟（壮大な墓）があります。

He passed away on April 17, 1616.
1616年4月17日に亡くなりました。

Just 15 days before his passing, he left detailed instructions on matters such as his burial arrangements and funeral ceremony.
亡くなる日のたった15日前に、家康公は埋葬やお葬式などの事柄について詳しい指示を残しました。

In accordance to his instructions, his remains were moved from Sumpu Castle to Mt. Kuno (Kunozan) and buried there within the day.
その指示に従って、家康公の亡骸は駿府城から久能山まで運ばれ、その日のうちに埋葬されました。

The original burial place was a small wood structure.
創建当初は小さい木造の建物がありました。

It was later replaced with the present stone tower by the third Shogun and Ieyasu’s grandson, Tokugawa Iemitsu.
後に3代将軍で家康の孫である徳川家光によって、現在の石造りの塔に建て替えられました。

The structure's height is 5.5 meters and the circumference is 8 meters.
その建造物は高さ5.5メートル、周囲8メートルです。

The stone tower is facing the west.
その石塔は西を向いています。

There are various explanations why it faces the west.
なぜ西向きなのか、様々な説があります。

The most plausible one is that even in death, Ieyasu is still looking after his homeland Okazaki in Mikawa province and Kyoto beyond it.
もっとも説得力のあるのは、家康は死んでからも故郷である三河の岡崎、そしてその向こうにある京都を気にかけているという説です。

Lord Tokugawa Ieyasu desired to protect Japan by becoming a deity after his passing.
徳川家康公は亡くなった後、神となり日本を守りたいと強く望んでいました。

Perhaps Ieyasu wanted to prevent any conflict with Toyotomi's remaining supporters in the west.
おそらく家康は西にいる豊臣家生き残りの支持者が争いを起こすのを防ぎたいと思ったのでしょう。
