「え、なんなん？プレゼントなん？」花蓮は驚いた表情で箱を両手で受け取って聡を見た。
「６年間の感謝の気持ちだよ。中一からこの仮設でれんと過ごして来れて楽しかったよ。本当にただ一人の幼馴染って感じだよね。れんの家族の方々には昨日挨拶しておいたんだ。れんには今日旅立つ前に部屋に行こうと思ってたんだよ。そしてこれを渡そうと思ってたんだ。バスに乗る前に、しばらくのさよならを言いたくて」
「これ、今あけていい？」
「だめ！俺がいなくなってからゆっくり開けてくれよ。なんか、はんかくさいから」
「はんかくさい！って恥ずかしい、って意味やったかな。久々にさとちゃんから東北弁聞けたわ」花蓮は小さなプレゼントを両手で抱きしめて、初めて今日笑顔になった。その笑顔を見て聡は心が少し緊張から解けていったように思えた。
「れんこそ、今日初めての笑顔だし。なんか不機嫌そうだったから。せっかくの旅立ちの日なのに喜んでくれてもいいかなと思ってたんだよ」
その聡の言葉に何か思いついたのか、ちょっと待ってえや、今、うちに行ってくる、１分で戻るから待っててくれ、と振り返って走り出した。スカートの下の細い脚が白く輝いて見える。朝の光のせいなのかな？やけに白く見える、と聡は花蓮の走っていく足元を見て思った。しかしせっかちですぐ走るのは花蓮の本能かな、と聡は思う。花蓮は中学、高校を通して陸上部で県内の短距離大会で優勝したこともあるほどの健脚だった。そして足がすらりと長い。
すぐに戻ってきた花蓮の手には、青色の包装紙で袋状に赤いリボンで結ばれた少し大きめの綺麗な袋があった。
「お返しではないけど、うちからの～、さとちゃんへのお守りのプレゼントだお～」花蓮は機嫌よい笑顔で聡に袋を渡した。お守り？ずいぶん大きいお守り袋だなぁ、と聡は袋を見た。確かに袋に金文字の、お守り、という言葉が印刷されている。
「そうや、うちからさとちゃんへのお守り。旅の道中の無事と、変な虫がつかんように守ってくれるんや。感謝せい、さ・と・し」人差し指を立ててゆっくりと右から左に動かしながら花蓮は聡の名前を呼んだ。
「ありがとう。お守りにしては大きいからバックに常に入れとくのが難しいかもですが。何が入っているかはお守りだから見ないほうがいいのかな」
「そう、いまはあけたらあかん。罰が当たる。今年の10月15日の中秋の名月の夜空の下で開けることを許す」
「それってれんの誕生日ジャン。誕生日に僕がれんのプレゼントを開ける？意味不明」
「まぁ、その時に開けたら今の言葉の意味が判るから今は考えんでええわ」花蓮は今度はくすくす笑いをこらえるように聡を見た。
「お前、なんか企んどるな。隠し事をするときはいつもくすくす笑いをこらえた仕草をするから分かりやすい女の子だよなぁ」
聡はホンワカな気持ちになって、心の力が緩んでいくのが分かった。れんと別れるのか、、、複雑な気持ちだな、と聡は思った。と気が緩んだときに花蓮は聡のほっぺたにキスをした。聡は頬に柔らかなぬくもりがあたって不意にのけぞってしまったが、眼前にいる花蓮の目に涙が溢れていくのを見て驚いた。そしてその涙顔を見た聡にも突然溢れてきた何とも言えない情念に、突き動かされるように花蓮を手繰り寄せてぎゅっと抱きしめた。きつくきつく花蓮を抱きしめた。聡は花蓮の嗚咽を耳元で聞きながら、ただ何も考えず，ずっとこうしていたいと強く思った。暖かそうな日差しが桜木にあたって、桜の花びらのすべては真っ白な雪のように輝いて揺らめいていた。
