ノーベル平和賞受賞の日本原水爆被害者団体協議会（日本被団協）は、米国が1945年8月に広島と長崎に投下した原爆の被害者による唯一の全国組織で、都道府県にある地方組織で構成される（現在は36地方組織）。
戦後、日本を占領した連合国軍総司令部（GHQ）は原爆被害の報道を厳しく規制した。しかし、54年3月、米国の水爆実験で、日本のマグロ漁船「第五福竜丸」が被ばくした「ビキニ事件」で反核運動が活発化。

日本被団協の運動を受けて57年に原爆医療法が施行され、被爆者健康手帳の交付のほか、健康診断や医療を国費で受けられるようになった。68年制定の原爆特別措置法で健康管理手当などの支給が始まり、94年に両法を一本化した被爆者援護法が制定された。

「核兵器のない世界」の実現を目指し、被爆体験の証言活動に積極的に取り組んできた。核保有国と非保有国が原則5年に1度、核軍縮を協議する核拡散防止条約（NPT）再検討会議に2005年以降、代表団を派遣。被爆者自らがスピーチするほか、会場の国連本部で原爆展を開いてきた。
