盆送り火は、お盆の期間に一緒に過ごした先祖の霊をあの世へ送り出す行事です。一般的には8月16日の夕方に行われ、前日の15日に行う場合もあります。この日をお盆の送り日とも呼びます。迷わぬように、玄関先で焚いた火は、ご先祖様への目印として機能します。また、お盆の送り火は、煙があの世へ届くとされており、お供え物と一緒に焚いて、あの世へ「この世の手土産」を届ける役割もあります。

It is generally held on the evening of August 16, and may be held on the 15th of the previous day. This day is also called the day of the Bon festival.
