It was the night of the annual Halloween party, and Ryan had never been less prepared.
毎年恒例のハロウィンパーティーの夜、ライアンはこれほど準備不足だったことはなかった。

His friends had spent weeks planning their costumes, but he? Well, he threw together a Frankenstein costume at the last minute.
友達は何週間もかけて衣装を準備していたが、彼はというと、フランケンシュタインの衣装をぎりぎりで寄せ集めた。

“I look ridiculous,” Ryan muttered, adjusting the fake bolts on his neck in the mirror.
「バカみたいだな」とライアンは鏡の前で偽のボルトを首に調整しながらつぶやいた。

“You'll be fine,” his roommate Dave said, smirking. “Besides, girls love a classic monster.”
「大丈夫だよ」とルームメイトのデイブはニヤリと笑って言った。「それに、女の子たちはクラシックなモンスターが好きだからさ。」

Ryan wasn’t convinced, but he had no other options.
ライアンは納得していなかったが、他に選択肢もなかった。

When he arrived at the party, he immediately felt out of place.
パーティーに到着すると、すぐに場違いな気分になった。

Everyone was dressed as superheroes, celebrities, or sexy versions of something random.
みんなはスーパーヒーローや有名人、何かのセクシーなバージョンの衣装を着ていた。

But him? He was a patchwork of green makeup and plastic bolts.
でも彼は？緑色のメイクとプラスチックのボルトで作られたパッチワーク状態だった。

“I told you, I look stupid,” Ryan whispered to Dave.
「言っただろ、俺はバカみたいだって」とライアンはデイブにささやいた。

“Trust me, just wait,” Dave winked and disappeared into the crowd.
「信じてくれ、待ってればいい」とデイブはウィンクして、群衆の中に消えた。

Ryan sighed and headed for the punch bowl. He could hide there until it was time to leave.
ライアンはため息をつき、パンチボウルに向かった。そこで隠れて、帰る時間になるまで過ごせばいい。

But before he could reach it, a girl in a witch costume stopped him.
しかし、パンチボウルにたどり着く前に、魔女の衣装を着た女の子が彼を止めた。

“Wow, Frankenstein! That’s so cool!” she said, her eyes wide with admiration.
「わあ、フランケンシュタイン！すごくカッコいい！」と彼女は言い、目を大きく見開いていた。

Ryan blinked. “Uh, thanks. I wasn’t sure it was... cool.”
ライアンはまばたきした。「あ、ありがとう。カッコいいかどうかはよくわからなかったけど。」

“No, it’s amazing! You nailed it!” she beamed.
「いや、すごいよ！完璧だね！」と彼女はにっこり笑った。

Before Ryan could respond, two more girls approached him.
ライアンが返事をする前に、さらに二人の女の子が彼に近づいてきた。

“Frankenstein! I love your costume,” one said, while the other nodded in agreement.
「フランケンシュタイン！その衣装大好き」と一人が言い、もう一人もうなずいた。

Ryan was speechless.
ライアンは言葉を失った。

“I told you, girls love a classic monster,” Dave whispered in his ear, appearing out of nowhere.
「言っただろ、女の子はクラシックなモンスターが好きなんだって」とデイブがどこからともなく現れて耳元でささやいた。

“Okay, maybe you were right,” Ryan admitted, still in disbelief.
「うん、もしかしたら君が正しかったかも」とライアンは信じられないまま認めた。

The rest of the night was a blur of compliments, photos, and requests for dances.
その夜は、褒め言葉や写真撮影、ダンスのリクエストの嵐であっという間に過ぎていった。

“Ryan, you're so mysterious in that costume!” one girl giggled.
「ライアン、その衣装だとすごくミステリアスだね！」と一人の女の子がくすくす笑った。

“I... uh... thanks,” Ryan stammered.
「えっと…ありがとう」とライアンはどもった。

By the end of the night, Ryan had more phone numbers than he knew what to do with.
夜の終わりには、ライアンはどうしていいかわからないくらいの電話番号を手に入れていた。

As he and Dave walked back home, Ryan shook his head in disbelief.
デイブと一緒に家に帰る途中、ライアンは信じられないように頭を振った。

“I can’t believe it. All I did was dress up as Frankenstein.”
「信じられないよ。フランケンシュタインに仮装しただけなのに。」

“Exactly,” Dave said, laughing. “Turns out, being dead is a good look for you.”
「その通り」とデイブは笑った。「死んでるのが君には似合ってるってことさ。」

Ryan laughed, realizing that sometimes, even the least effort can have the biggest impact.
ライアンは笑った。時には、最小限の努力が最大の効果を生むこともあるのだと気づいた。

And from that day on, Frankenstein became his go-to Halloween costume, not just for the scares, but for the attention.
そしてそれ以来、フランケンシュタインの仮装は彼の定番のハロウィン衣装になった。怖がらせるためだけでなく、注目を集めるために。
