ル・クレジオ(著) | 「物質的恍惚」(岩波文庫)
ル・クレジオ。2008年、ノーベル賞作家。その頃に、岩波文庫に『物質的恍惚』が入ったので読んだ。
小説というよりも、哲学の本を読むような気持ちで読んだ記憶がある。
『物質的恍惚』はル・クレジオが27歳の時に書いた作品。
この記事では、テキストとして、ル・クレジオ(豊崎光一[訳])『物質的恍惚』、岩波文庫、2010年を用いて、その一節を(私自身の勉強のために)英訳してみたい。

幸福という考えはまさに典型的な誤解である。いったいなんのために幸福を？なぜわれわれが幸福であらねばならぬわけがあろうか？こんなにも広範で、こんなにも抽象的な、しかも日常生活にこんなにも深く結びついた感情が、いったい何によって養われうるというのか？それについてどんな考えをいだくにせよ、幸福とはただ単に世界と人間との協和である。１つの受肉なのだ。
The idea of being happy is a typical misunderstanding. Why be happy? Why must we be happy? Who knows that so vast and abstract an emotion deeply rooted in our daily lives can be brought up? However hard we think about happiness, it is no more than a cooperation between us and the world around us. It is an incarnation.
幸福をもってみずからの主要な探求目標とする文明は、挫折し、美辞麗句をならべる定めである。理想的な幸福を証拠だてるものは何もない。そのことはちょうど、完全で絶対的な愛とか、あるいは全的な信仰の感情とか、あるいは恒久的な健康さの状態を証拠だてるものが何もないのと同様である。絶対は実現しえない。この神話の明晳さに耐ええないのだ。唯一無二の真実とは生きてあるということ、唯一無二の幸福とは自分が生きていると知っていることである。
The civilization that devotes itself to seeking happiness is destined to end in failure, using cliche appearing to be beautiful only on the surface.
Nothing can guarantee an ideal happiness. That is exactly the same as nothing can guarantee a love perfect and absolute, a perfect religious feeling, and permanent health. Nothing absolute cannot be attained. Nothing can endure clarity of this mythology. The only naked truth is that we live therefore we are. The only happiness lies in the fact that one knows one lives.
どんなものであれ、一般化とか、神話とか、体系とかのばかげたところは、それが生きた世界とのあいだに前提する断絶である。
Whatever form they have, what is absurd about generalization, myths, systems and what not take it for granted that there is a discrepancy between the abstract and reality.
まるでこの世界が、諸情念と知性の要請するところを満足させるに足りるほど広大ではなく、悲劇的あるいは喜劇的ではなく、思いがけぬものではないとでもいうように。人間の伝達の貧しい手段の数々、それをしも人間たちはなおも変質させて、嘘の源泉にせざるをえないわけなのだ。
Isn't this world vast? Is it neither tragical nor comical nor beyond our expectations? No, this world can satisfy our emotions and intellects. Human beings cannot help turning numerous poor means of communication into a resource of lies.
