【映画の中の詩】『静かなる男』(1952)

監督のジョン・フォードはアイルランド系。イェイツが故郷アイルランドへの思いを込めて描いた架空の村イニスフリーが映画の舞台に設定されている。
主演の二人、ジョン・ウェインはフォードと同じくアイルランド系、モーリン・オハラはアイルランドのダブリン出身である。

立ちあがって出かけよう,イニスフリーへ.
そして小さな小屋を建てよう,粘土造りの粗末な小屋を.
豆の畝(うね)を九列植えて,蜜蜂の巣箱を一つ作ろう.
私は一人で暮らすのだ,蜂の羽音を聞きながら.
あそこなら安らぎが得られる,安らぎがゆっくり滴り落ちる.
こおろぎの歌声の間こえる所へ朝の帳(とばり)から滴り落ちる.
真夜中の微かな輝き,真昼の燃えるような輝き.
タベには紅(べに)ひわ島の羽根が,真紅に輝く.
立ち上って出掛けよう,あそこでは湖水が日夜,
低い音を立て岸を洗うのが聞こえる.
道や灰色の石だたみに,立っている間私は,
その音を心の奥底で聞くのだ.

I will arise and go now, and go to Innisfree,
And a small cabin build there, of clay and wattles made;
Nine bean-rows will I have there, a hive for the honey-bee,
And live alone in the bee-loud glade.

And I shall have some peace there, for peace comes dropping slow,
Dropping from the veils of the morning to where the cricket sings;
There midnight’s all a glimmer, and noon a purple glow,
And evening full of the linnet’s wings.

I will arise and go now, for always night and day
I hear lake water lapping with low sounds by the shore;
While I stand on the roadway, or on the pavements grey,
