短い問題を（なるべく）理屈で考え、答えを出していくシリーズです。
今回は東京大学の2020年の問題です。

(A)の内容を日本語で説明せよ。

(1)「did it」と「them」はそれぞれ何を指すか？

(2)「distinguish：区別する、見分ける」とはどういう行動を表すか？

ヒントに対する解答

(1)「did it：それをやった = distinguished themselves(the days)」
「them = the days」

(2)「distinguish：区別する、見分ける」とは、「複数あるものを、それぞれ別のものだと認識すること」。この英文では「the days」という複数のものを、それぞれ別のものだと認識すること。
比較級や「the same / different」など、「比べる(この英文では「区別する」)」を表す語句に対し、どれだけ敏感に反応できるかが大事。
少なくとも、問題に絡んでいる部分だけでも、比べる表現がないか確認したい。

答えと和訳

答え：
人が日々をそれぞれ別のものとして区別していなかったら、日々自体がそれぞれを別のものとして区別をつけることなどめったになかった。

和訳：
私たちはロサンゼルスから2時間の、他の郊外と連なる一つの郊外に暮らしていて、そこでの日々は、自分が代わりにそうするのでないなら、ほとんど区別がつかなかった。
