A mirror for a refugee
What a complicated world
I have a question. What did you do when you were 5 years old?
In my case, I always was with my grandparents to be given a lot of Kit Kat. How about a girl from Afghanistan, Sara? One day, her mother hold her hand and left her home to start a new life in Denmark. She never thought it was the last day to stand on the Afghanistan solid.
According to the UNHCR, as of 2016, 65.6 million people were forced to displace or flee from their home because of persecution, discrimination or human right abuses. The number of refugees is still increasing. Everything is extremely complicating and nobody knows how to solve this crisis.
Left the home
The area where Sara lived was a target from Taliban just because people in the area look like Asian and Taliban didn’t think they were the true Afghan citizens. Due to their attacks, the situation there was getting worse and dangerous day by day so her father decided to leave and move to Denmark. Later, she went to her father’s place with her mother.
Although leaving her home was heart-breaking, now she thinks it was lucky to leave. Not because it was risky to live there but because the education in Afghanistan is not easy to get, especially for women. Her mother also couldn’t get any education in Afghanistan. Fortunately, she could study some in Denmark. Unlike her, Sara has deserved an education in Denmark and studied hard in university. It is not only for herself but her parents as they didn’t get enough education in their childhood.
Chaotic
Sara pointed out that Afghanistan is in a big negative spiral. If the present group which rules the area has gone, another group will take it over and do the same things as the former group did. She always hopes that Afghanistan will be a peaceful country and start over someday. However, things are much more chaotic and complicated than we think. What we know at this moment is a little piece of what’s going on. The information from the places where war occurs is so little and it can include fake news. Few know what is true and what is fake. The more Sara considers Afghanistan, the more she lose the hope.
Hope
“I will live my own life in Denmark.” At the end of the interview, she said so. Despite many refugees try to find a place to live and work, few can make it. However, she is about to realise it. I believe there must be a big effort by Danish government, but more than anything, she has corresponded it and found a way to live by herself. I strongly believe she will be their hope.
(The name Sara has been made up for identification purposes. Her real name is known to the author).
