どうして薬指って呼ぶの
Why is it Called the "Medicinal Finger"?

『ねえ　モモちゃん　この指は親指でしょ、これが人差し指、これが　中指、そしてこの小さいのが　小指・・ここまではわかるけど、この薬指って　何？』
『えっとね・・・っていうか　指の話をすると　私には　親指がないし・・・つまり　人間のような　親指がないっていう意味ですけど。だから　ルーちゃんのその質問には答えられないと思うな。』
『はは～ん　知らないんだ。ふ～ん！』
『しっ　知ってますよ。つまり・・・それは　薬指っていうくらいだから薬を塗る指ですよ。』
『えっ　でも　薬なら他の指で塗ったっていいでしょ。何もこの指でなくても。』
そりゃ　そうだけど、この指で塗ったんですよ。だから薬指って呼ぶことで全然問題なし。以上報告終わり！』
『ダメですよ。それじゃ説明になってません。』
『もちろん　他にも呼び方はありますよ。小さい子に教える時なんかはお父さん指、お母さん指、お兄ちゃん指、お姉ちゃん指それに赤ちゃん指とかね。』
『それは　お隣の中国っていう国では使えないでしょう。
一人っ子ばかりだからお父さんとお母さんと子供一人　合計三人しかいません。だからその場合はおじいちゃん　おばあちゃんも加えることになるよね　それで五人かな。』
『う～ん　言われてみれば確かにそうなるかも。
　それでっと　薬指の件ですけど　昔はベニサシ指とも呼ばれていたみたい。ことばの通り口紅を塗るときに使ったってことですよね。
　それから薬師如来様が悟りとかお祈りの象徴として、この指をちょっと曲げて使ったことから、薬師如来の指ってことで、薬指にしたとか。』
『ほ～　なるほど。ヤクシニョライ（薬師如来）の指からきてるんですか。』
・・・とは言っても意味はあまりよくわかりません。それに私の場合は　どの指も薬を塗ったりするようにはできてないですよ。それでもまあこの指があればこそ　手足を使って　人間なんかよりは余程カッコ良く、早く走れるし、穴堀なんか最高にうまくできますけどね。

... But I don't really understand the meaning very well. Also, in my case, I can't use any of my fingers to apply medicine. But thanks to this finger, I can use my hands and feet to run much faster and dig holes better than humans.
