イギリス・パンケーキレースの旅 (14)〜博士ちゃん The Pancake Race Trip 14-Masters!

*English follows. これは2023年2月18日から25日まで、パンケキーレースの視察で、イギリスのオルニーという町を訪れたときのレポートです。

OMS（オルニー・ミドル・スクール）の校長先生が一番アピールしていたのは学校独自の「マスターアワード・プログラム」でした。

児童は教科によって設定されたいくつかのテーマから好きなものを選びます。学校はサポートするためにスタディー・スキル・セッションを提供します。教科リーダーの指導を受けながら規定の過程を経て、プレゼンやテストを受けて合格すればその課目のマスターとして登録され、写真と共に廊下に掲示されるのです。まるで大学の履修のようです。

素敵なのは、マスターになった児童は卒業式に２名の特別なゲストを招待することができるのです。

OMSには全部で14の教科があります。

英語（つまり国語）リーディング、英語ライティング、算数、理科、コンピューター、歴史、地理、PSHE（パーソナル・ソーシャル・アンド・ヘルス・エデュケーション〜人格的社会的健康教育）、RE（リリジャス・エデュケーション〜宗教教育）、PE（フィジカル・エデュケーション〜体育）、音楽、図工、DT（デザイン・アンド・テクノロジー）、言語。

7才〜11才までが学んでいますが、この年齢層の割には教科は細かく分かれていて、その中からさらに細かいマスターのテーマが設定されています。テーマは日本人からすると珍しいものが結構あります。

例えば算数では「フィボナッチ数列」があり、私なんて先日ロマネスコ（カリフラワーに似た緑のあの野菜です）はフィボナッチ数列だと知って興奮したばかりです。

また音楽のテーマに「楽譜」があり、前書きに「多くの人は耳で演奏することができますが、演奏のためにバンドやオーケストラでは、楽譜を読むことが重要視されることがあります。」とあり、最初から楽譜で勉強してきた私にとっては驚きでした。

子どもは夢中になるととんでもない才能を発揮します。好きな課題がやれて、先生からも特別に指導が受けられて、そして学識が深まっていくなんて、何て贅沢な時間だろうと思います。

次回はOMSに私を知っているという女の子がいたという話をします。

What the principal of OMS (Olney Middle School) was most appealing to me was the school's unique "Master Award Program".

Students choose their favorite theme from a number of themes set by the subject. The school provides study skills sessions to support them. The students go through a prescribed process under the guidance of their subject leader, and if they pass a presentation and a test, they are registered as masters of their subject and their picture is displayed in the hallway. It is just like taking a college course.

The best part is that the master students are allowed to invite two special guests to the graduation ceremony.

There are a total of 14 subjects at OMS.

English, Reading, English Writing, Math, Science, Computers, History, Geography, PSHE, RE, PE, Music, Arts and Crafts, DT and Language.

Students from 7 to 11 years old are studying there, and for this age group, the subjects are divided into detailed themes, which are further subdivided into detailed master themes. There are quite a few themes that are unusual from a Japanese perspective.

For example, in math, there is the Fibonacci sequence. I was just excited to learn the other day that romanesco (a green vegetable similar to cauliflower) is the Fibonacci sequence.

Also, on the subject of music, there is a "music score". The preface says, "Most people can play by ear, but reading score is sometimes important in bands and orchestras for performance purposes." This was a surprise to me, as we Japanese have studied with music score from the beginning of music class.

Children have a tremendous amount of talent when they get into it. What a luxury to be able to do the assignments they love, get extra instruction from their teachers, and learn more.
