英語日記011：論より証拠

さあ、書くぞ～。

1 Evidence Rather Than Argument

Yesterday, I had two classes in my private school. One of my students works on his homework at his school. He does not remember that the sum of the inner angles of a triangle is 180 degrees.

It is difficult for him to rote memorize this answer. So I tried to show him a piece of evidence. I drew a triangle on white paper and cut off each angle. Then I pasted each piece gathering three corners. The gathered three corners show a straight line, like a horizon. Then my student understood the answer.

It is very exciting for me to explain new things so that students can understand easily. Especially when they can not understand logically, using visual aid is one of the most attractive ways to make them sense. 

Just like the Japanese proverb says, it is "evidence rather than argument".

・rote memorizeっていうのがダメらしい。単にmemorizeでいいでしょ？と言われるのですが、日本語の「丸暗記」っていうニュアンスを英語で表そうとしたとき、どうしたらいいのでしょうね。memorize without thinking...とか？

4 おわりに

昨日からgrammarlyをアップグレードして使っているのですが、指摘が踏み込んだものになってくれてとても手ごたえがあります。

実はこの手のサービスはネイティブの方も使うんだとか。確かに自分も記事の校正で「てにをは」間違えていることに気づくし、この手のサービスは今後も需要があるんだろうな。
