Vol.17 What is Autumn recruitment? - Job Hunting Guide for International Students

This is Living in Peace (LIP) Refugee Project.

Most Japanese companies recruit new graduates from the spring to summer of their fourth year of university, and 85% of students have received a job offer by the summer. (Recruit Co., Ltd, "Status of job offers as of 1 August 2021")

On the other hand, some companies continue to recruit from autumn onwards(autumn recruitment), so even if you haven't received a job offer by summer, there are still opportunities left.
In this article we have gathered some information on autumn recruitment. Please take a look.

◆What is Autumn recruitment

In vol. 1: "Job-hunting schedule",we introduced a job-hunting schedule for getting an offer from spring to summer of the fourth year of university, in order to find a job in a Japanese company.

Companies that fail to meet their recruitment targets by the summer will continue their recruitment activities from autumn onwards. This is what is known as 'autumn recruitment'.
If you haven't received a job offer by the summer, or if you are not satisfied with the conditions of the company that has made you an offer, you can try again by entering the companies that are recruiting in autumn.

Although there are still opportunities with autumn recruitment as described above, the number of available positions tends to be smaller than it was until the summer, and the competition becomes more intense.
In addition, there will be more rivals who weren't looking for jobs during spring recruitment, such as students returning from study abroad or those who were planning to apply for graduate school. Instead of counting on autumn recruitment from the beginning, see it as the extension to your job hunting till the summer.

◆Schedule of autumn recruitment

The definition of autumn recruitment varies from company to company.
Most companies define 'autumn recruitment' as recruitment activities from August to the end of November. Recruitment activities from December onwards are often defined as 'winter recruitment'.
The process is the same for both autumn and winter recruitment, which involves submitting CV/entry sheets and going through interviews.

◆How to find companies that have autumn recruitment

As the number of available positions for autumn recruitment is limited, it is essential to collect information proactively.

In vol. 6 'Job hunting events and information websites', we have prepared a list of websites that provide useful information on job hunting, such as recruitment information for students with foreign roots, schedules of joint information sessions and seminars, etc. Please have a look.

If there are companies you are interested in, it is also a good idea to access their recruitment pages directly to obtain information. Some companies may start taking entries for autumn recruitment once summer recruitment has closed.
