ラッセル「The Conquest of Happiness(幸福論)」を解釈する（6）
Bertrand RussellのThe Conquest of Happinessについて、学習の忘備録として、文構造の解説的なものを残します。内容的には下記の続きです。

The wise man will be as happy as circumstances permit and if he finds the contemplation of the universe painful beyond a point, he will contemplate something else instead. This is what I wish to prove in the present chapter. I wish to persuade the reader that, whatever the arguments may be, reason lays no embargo upon happiness; nay, more, I am persuaded that those who quite sincerely attribute their sorrows to their views about the universe are putting the cart before the horse: the truth is that they are unhappy for some reason of which they are not aware, and this unhappiness leads them to dwell upon the less agreeable characteristics of the world in which they live.

The wise manは前回扱った文のthese sufferersを指示すると意味上のつながりから考えられます。as circumstances permitは「状況次第では」くらいに捉えると良いでしょう。and以降、if節内はS V O C M2となっており、the universe is painfulというOとCの関係があります。beyond a pointは主節を修飾し、「ある程度を超えると」とこの文では解釈できます。「宇宙が苦痛であるという考えがある点を超えると」というのがif節の内容。heから始まる文はS V O M2a M2bの形で、elseはsomethingを修飾すると捉えても、something elseでひとまとまりと考えても差し支えないでしょう。M2bのinsteadはhe以降の主節を修飾します。
This is what I wish to prove in the present chapter.
Thisは前文の内容を指示、whatは名詞節を導く複合関係代名詞で、proveまでが主節のOです。in the present chapterは主節を修飾します。
I wish to persuade the reader that, whatever the arguments may be, reason lays no embargo upon happiness;
wish to persuadeは一つの動詞句としてVと考えて、S V O that M2a S V M2bと;(カンマ)前までの文構造を整理します。that以下はラッセルが読者に考えて欲しい内容が示されています。M2aのwhatever the arguments may beはthat節内の副詞節の挿入で、reason以下の主節を修飾します。embargoは難単語で「制限、禁止」の意味でここでは用いられています。「理性は幸福への足枷ではない」と、要約しておきます。
nay, more, I am persuaded that those who quite sincerely attribute their sorrows to their views about the universe are putting the cart before the horse:
nayは古語的表現で「いな、しからず」の意味で用いられています。moreは「加えて、さらに」の意。続く文はS V(p.p) that S M1 V(attribute) A to B M2a V O M2bの形です。that以下であることを説得された(考えるように促された)」という内容。M1のwho quite sincerely attribute their sorrows to their viewsのwhoは主格の関係代名詞で、thoseを修飾します。また、about the universeはtheir viewsを修飾すると考えられます。悲しみを宇宙についての自身の考えのせいにしてしまう人々はare putting the cart before the horse「馬の前に荷車を置いている」とされているのですが、直訳すると意味が通りません。この表現はput the cart before the horse「順序が逆転する、本末転倒である」という慣用表現です。まとめると「悲しみを宇宙についての自身の考えのせいにしてしまう人々は本末転倒である」となります。
the truth is that they are unhappy for some reason of which they are not aware, and this unhappiness leads them to dwell upon the less agreeable characteristics of the world in which they live.
andの前まではS V that S V C M2 M1という文構造です。thatは同格thatと解釈できます。いずれにせよ後に続く文に欠落がない完全な文であるという点を確認しておきましょう。theyは前文のthose who …を指示すると捉えられます。for some reasonがM2でtheyで始まる主節を修飾します。of which以降からカンマまでがM1、of which以降はsome reasonを修飾します。
they are not aware of some reason
のof some reasonがof whichという前置詞プラス関係代名詞として前に出た形です。
and以降、S V O to V O M1a M1bの形です(dwell uponは説明の便宜上動詞句として考えます)。this unhappinessはandの前のunhappyの内容を指示していると捉えます。lead O to Vで「VするようにOを導く」という表現。Oのthemの指示内容は前出のtheyと同様です。M1aのof the worldはcharacteristicsを修飾、 M1bのin whichはthey live in the worldが前置詞プラス関係代名詞として前に移動した形でthe worldを修飾します。「こうした不幸によって、人々は自身の住む世界についての不愉快な有り様について嘆くようになる」というのが大意です。
