in my years of training. He brought a thousand colors to the music, he made the singers smile and the orchestra dance. What joy, what pure artistry! Thank you, maestro, you are sorely missed. #SeijiOzawa #ThankYou

Saddened to hear the passing of Seiji Ozawa. When I was in college I was thrilled by his interpretation of Salome. Heard the Saito Kinen under his tact in London. Had the honor of chatting with him during rehearsal of Hansel and Gretel (photo). His music was warmly human.

Goodbye to Ozawa a rare creature of utter commitment. Turangalila in Köln was one of greatest concerts I heard. Here is an phenomenal Elias that seems unmatched. Digital Concert Hall: Mendelssohns »Elias« mit Seiji Ozawa, Matthias Goerne und Annette Dasch

The captivating, dashing, high-voltage, and internationally-renowned symphony conductor Seiji Ozawa has died at his home in Tokyo. He was 88. Born in 1935 in Japanese-occupied Manchuria, Ozawa studied piano as a child, but after breaking two fingers in a rugby game, switched to conductor studies to ultimately become one of a tiny group of classical musicians --including Leonard Bernstein, Beverly Sills, and Luciano Pavarotti-- who were known not only to concert audiences but to the general public. Ozawa is closely remembered for his 29-year tenure as the conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra where Bostonians and the world became enraptured with his unique, intensely-focused, and dynamically communicative style of conducting. The Globe’s coverage of the passing of Seiji Ozawa includes this 1999 photo of the BSO legend with Carl Yastrzemski. You don’t see Yaz smile like that too often.
