2月15日。満月の夜、クシナガラ郊外の沙羅双樹に横たわり臨終迎えたお釈迦様の命日である。お釈迦さんが亡くなったことを「涅槃(ねはん)」という。

February 15th. On the night of the full moon, it is the anniversary of the death of Buddha, who lay down on the sal tree in the suburbs of Kushinagar. The death of Mr. Shaka is called "Nirvana". 

釈迦像を本尊とする寺院では涅槃図を掲げ、お釈迦様の遺徳を偲ぶ法要「涅槃会(ねはんえ)」が随所で行われている。

At temples whose principal image is the Buddha statue, the reclining Buddha is displayed, and the memorial service "Nehane" is held everywhere in memory of Buddha's virtues.

昨日、大阪府池田市にある佛日寺では、コロナ禍の非常事態宣言発令による自粛で三密をさけるため簡略化し開催された。まず涅槃図を前に手を合わせ、涅槃図に描かれている、沙羅双樹に囲まれ横たわるお釈迦様と、護法善神、菩薩、そして数多くの動物などとの関りについて解説いただいた。
涅槃図は、お釈迦様と繋がりをもつすべての生きとし生ける人や動物がお釈迦様に寄り添い悲しんでいる姿が描かれている。そこにはそれぞれのお釈迦様とのストーリーが秘められているようだ。一つ一つ取り上げ紹介したいと思うが、口頭の解説のみでは覚えられないので、学びの時間を少々いただき、伝えることができればと思っている。

Yesterday, it was held at Butsunichi-ji Temple in Ikeda City, Osaka Prefecture, in order to avoid the three straits by refraining from the announcement of the state of emergency of Corona.
First, he put his hands together in front of the reclining Buddha and explained the relationship between the Buddha lying surrounded by sal trees, the Dharmapala, the Bodhisattva, and many animals.
The reclining Buddha depicts all living people and animals connected to the reclining Buddha cuddling and saddening the reclining Buddha. It seems that there is a story with each Buddha. I would like to take up and introduce each one, but I can't remember it only by oral explanations, so I hope I can give some time to learn and convey it.

和尚から聞いた話をひとつ。横たわるお釈迦様の足元で悲しみに打ちひしがれる老女が描かれている。この老女は、お釈迦様の大のファンで、お釈迦様が生きている間には会うことが叶わなかったが、入滅の際に想いが叶った。が、お釈迦様の姿に落胆し、悲しむ様子が克明に表現されている。
この絵の中に猫が一匹描かれている。この話もまた深い謂れが秘められている。涅槃図によっては猫が描かれてないものもある、と聞く。その話も、また後日に。

One story I heard from Osho. An old woman who is overwhelmed by sadness at the feet of a lying Buddha is depicted. This old woman is a big fan of Shaka-sama, and she couldn't meet her while Shaka-sama was alive, but she realized her feelings when Shaka-sama died. She is clearly expressed as she is disappointed and saddened by the appearance of Buddha.
A cat is drawn in this picture. This story also seems to hide a deep so-called. I hear that some reclining Buddhas do not have cats drawn. That story will come later.

佛日寺のこの涅槃図は、平成30年に修復されたものである。高さ3.8m、幅3.2mあり、池田市にあるものでは最大級の大きさのものである。江戸時代に佛日寺に寄贈された貴重な涅槃図。左右には紺地に金泥で文字が書かれ、他に類を見ない大変珍しいものである。

This reclining Buddha of Butsujitsu-ji Temple was restored in 2018. With a height of 3.8m and a width of 3.2m, it is one of the largest in Ikeda City. A precious reclining Buddha donated to Butsujitsu-ji Temple during the Edo period. On the left and right, letters are written in gold paint on a dark blue background, which is extremely rare and unique.
