花も美しいが、木の中も美しい　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　The flowers are beautiful, but inside trees are also beautiful

あちらこちらで梅がちらほら咲き始めている。　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　先日、ある方と喋っていてこんな質問をされた。　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　紅梅と白梅の違いは? と聞かれ、もちろん花の色が違うことは誰が見ても歴然としている。それ以外に? と突っ込まれ、答えになるようなことを言ってみたがすべて外れた。開花すれば花の色で判断できるが、開花前はどのように判断するか知っているか、と。えぇぇ、それは幹や枝の表面や太さでしょ! と言い返したが、 “ブブ～” という返事が返ってきた。

Plums are starting to bloom here and there. The other day l was talking to someone and asked this question. When asked what the difference is between red plum and white plum, it is obvious to everyone that the color of the flowers is different. Other than that, I was rushed into it and tried to say something that would be the answer, but everything was off. If it blooms, it can be judged by the color of the flower, but do you know how to judge before flowering? Well, it was the surface and thickness of the trunk and branches!

禅問答しているかのようなやり取りに相手も嫌気がさしたのか、「紅梅と白梅の違いは木の断面で分かる」と。開花前でも枝を切ればどちらなのか判別できるということらしいが、 “えぇぇぇ～、木を切るんかぃ!” と突っ込みたかったけど、それは大人対応で喉まで出ていたが呑み込んだ。

Perhaps the other party was disgusted by the exchange as if he was asking a Zen question, "You can tell the difference between red plum and white plum from the cross section of the tree." It seems that you can tell which one you are by cutting the branches even before flowering, but I wanted to rush in, "Well, cut the tree!"

紅梅の断面は紅色で、白梅は白色というのが、この写真でもわかる。しかし、切ってしまうと、木が乾燥し色が抜けていき徐々に褐色になっていくという。これは知らなかった。頭をいくら振ってもこの答えは出てこなかった。驚きである。　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　とき折目にするのだが、１本の木から紅梅と白梅の２種類が咲いているものがある。それは品種改良か接木なのだそうである。

You can see in this photo that the cross section of the red plum is red, and the white plum is white. However, when it is cut, the wood dries and loses its color, gradually turning brown. I didn't know this. No matter how much I shook my head, this answer didn't come out. I'm surprised.

調べてみると、このような写真があった。どなたかわからないが写真を借用した。花だけではなく木の中も美しい、命あるものの神秘を感じる。教えていただいた方への感謝も忘れずに! 　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　ちなみに、紅梅と白梅の実の味も違うようだが、一般的に梅干しや梅酒になど食用に使うのは白梅の実という。
