1週間のスケジュール
◯土曜〜日曜
この土日はロンドンにて、日本文化を広げるイベントのお手伝いに参加。
金曜日から三日間にわたって行われるイベントで、浮世絵ショップ、日本食の屋台、着物ファッションショー、茶道体験など、様々な店舗やイベントが目白押しだ。
運営周りのお手伝いをしつつ、時折着物のモデルをやったり、ワークショップのお手伝いなどをさせてもらった。
土日共に大盛況で、改めて日本文化の注目度の高さとポテンシャルを感じる二日間となった。
また、自身としては英語を使って働く経験にもなったので、今回参加できて良かったなぁと思っている。
できる限り色々な人と話そうと、最低でも100人くらいには英語で話しかけたり接客したりしたように思う。
色々な年代の方と話していて気づいたのは、自分は現地の比較的年配の方の言葉を聞き取るのが苦手だということだ。かつ、自分の発音もそうした方に伝わりにくかった。(例えば「full」という単語がなぜか伝わらなかったり)
もちろん決められた範囲の仕事をやれば最低限は良いのだが、それ以上に積極的に他の人やお店と関わり、手助けし、様々な経験を積むことを意識して動いていた。
その結果、様々なお店の方から、おにぎり、ケーキ、アイスにほうじ茶ラテ、お好み焼きに寿司など、色々食べ物をもらった笑
現地の日本人の方や海外の方などともつながったり、Netflixドラマで有名な俳優に会ったり、出会に恵まれた二日間となった。
ちなみに夕飯はパブで食べつつ、ユーロも観戦しました。

◯月曜
この日はロンドンからマンチェスターに移動し、そのまま授業に行ったため、かなりバタバタだった。
この日、クラスが一個上がったのだが、授業終了後にクラス変更のお知らせがあり、さらにもう一つ上のクラスに明日から上がることになった。
その結果、入学時に目標としていたレベル(CFERのC1レベルのクラス)に1ヶ月前倒しで辿り着いたため、英語における目標の一部は達成することができた。
ただし、まだまだそのレベルに上がりたてだし、現実的に足りない能力も多い。(特にリーディング)語学力にはまだまだ先のレベルがあるため、引き続き頑張りたい。
次なる目標としては、IELTSでoverall7.5以上を一年以内に取得したい。(まだ試験受けたことないけど。。)
また、自分がロンドンに行っている間に、新しいルームメイトが家に到着していた。ブラジル国籍のエンジニアで、英語が大変に流暢なルームメイトだ。
この結果、現在の家に住むルームメイトの国籍は、メキシコ、フランス、アルゼンチンとなった。その前はサウジアラビアの生徒もいた。色々な国の人と繋がることができて面白い。
そんなルームメイトたちと、夜は居間でテレビを囲み、ユーロを観戦した。サッカーは人々を繋ぐ言語だ。

◯火曜
この日は朝から授業。
新しいクラスに上がってからの初授業だったのだが、これまでのクラスとの違いをかなり感じた。
まず、授業でのインプットの量が減り、圧倒的にアウトプットの時間が増えた。スピーキングやディスカッションの時間も長く、扱うテーマもなかなか歯応えのあるものが多い。
難易度が上がったのを他の生徒も感じてなのか、おしゃべりする生徒も減り、みんな結構真剣。
出てくる単語もかなり難しいものが多く、さらにそれを辞書で調べることも禁じられる笑
文脈から推測したり、英語で代わりに説明してもらったり、英語を英語のまま捉えることを求められている。
授業の難易度が上がり、適度に負荷がかかって良いし、一層授業に集中しやすくなった。
少し背伸びをして、上のレベルでもがくことの大切さを改めて感じた。
授業後は2週間書き溜めてしまっていた以下のブログを2本書いて、1時間サッカーしてから帰宅。
夜はオーストリアの試合を後半だけ観戦。個人的に今大会で推しているチームだ。
ここ2試合はホストファミリーの家で、ルームメイトたちと一緒に試合を観戦することが多い。
後半だけ見ると圧倒的にオーストリアが良かったのだが、得点を決め切れず、惜しくも敗退となった。
最後の最後で決定的なシーンがあったのだが、トルコのキーパーのスーパーセーブに阻まれ、夢破れた。
ちなみに、そうしたシーンを英語でどのように表現するか調べてみた。
夜は今日学んだ新たな単語たちを復習してから就寝。

本日は終日英語の授業。
午前中はIELTSなどの試験対策のクラスを初めて受講し、午後はビジネス英語のクラスを受講。
午前中は初めてIELTSの模擬試験に取り組んだのだが、リーディングのスコアは6.0だった。。普通に最後の問題が解き終わらず、時間が足りなかった。。
結構知らない単語も多く、それが読むスピードの低下にかなり影響していたように思う。
IELTSの特性などは分かったため、対策をすればそこから6.5くらいまでには伸ばせそうな気がした。とはいえ、背伸びして早めに7.0は行けたら良いなと思う。
今後は単語帳と英文教材でリーディングの強化、Podcastなどで幅広いテーマの題材のリスニングにチャレンジすること、ライティングとスピーキングは今回もらった教材を使って勉強していきたい。
また、普段の授業でも、極力自分にタイムプレッシャーをかけてリーディングに取り組むことも重要だと感じた。

この日は朝6時頃起床。前日早く寝たため、目覚めが良かった。
今日は朝から昨日の授業の復習と課題を行う。今回は以下のようなwritingの課題が出題された。
文法チェックしたり色々やっていたので、完成させるのになんだかんだ1時間くらいかかった気がする。。
その後は授業。テーマはディベート。
上記のライティング課題にも関係しているのだが、sign languageを学校の必修科目にすべきかどうかについて賛成派と反対派に分かれてディベートを行う。
自身の英語力にはまだまだ物足りなさがあるのだが、論理的に話をしたり、プレゼンしたりするのは比較的得意なので、そうした力が役立っているように感じる。
まだ1週間目ではあるのだが、今回のクラスはこうしたアウトプットの機会が多く、とても良い経験をさせてもらっている。
夜は、1時間サッカーをしてから帰宅。
家では明日卒業するルームメイトと話をしながら夕食を食べた。彼はメキシコの空港で働いているそうで、非常に陽気な人物だ。
朝などの忙しいはずの時間にめちゃくちゃ長い時間シャワーを浴びており、浴室からはいつも歌声が聞こえてくる笑
メキシコのパチューカというところで働いているそうなので、今度メキシコに来たら連絡してくれ!と言ってくれた。
就寝前には、ブラジル出身のルームメイトと、各国の食事や観光スポット、仕事事情などについて話す。
日々新たな発見や出会いがあるのはありがたいなぁ。

今日も朝から授業。6時過ぎに眠い目を擦りながら起床。
今週のテーマは言語だったのだが、最終日の今日は消えゆく言語をどのように守っていくのかについてプレゼンするのが主な内容だった。
プレゼンの取り組み方は以下の通り
現在の英語レベルになると、スクリプトなどを読むことは許されない。インターネットなどで調査した後は手元のメモで論を整え、発表時は何も見ずにプレゼンを行うように指示された。
最近感じるのは、英語もある程度のレベルまで到達すると、そこからは国語力が大事になってくるなということ。
論理的に話を展開したり、納得してもらえるようにデータを効果的に活用したり、これは純粋な英語力というより別の力だと思う。
チームメンバーはフランス人とアルゼンチン人だったのだが、二人とも英語が上手く、意欲的な生徒だったため、プレゼン制作は比較的簡単だった。
取り扱う言語は自身の提案により、「コイサン語」に決まった。「コイサン語」とは以下のような言語だ。
なぜこの言語が急に浮かんだかというと、前職で「ことば」についての小学生授業を担当していたことがあり、その時「コイサン語」が印象に残っていたからだ。
自身は主にイントロや言語の特徴パートを担当したのだが、以下のような内容を中心に、コイサン語の特徴、地理的分布、人類史における重要性などを語った。
プレゼンは前職でたくさん行っていたため、途中にクイズや双方向性を担保する仕掛けを入れながら行った。
結果的に講師からの評価は良く、難易度が上がったクラスでの初週だったが、ある程度ついていける手応えは掴めた。
授業後は今週で卒業する友人たちを送り出し、スタバで仮眠を取り、英語課題と記事執筆を行う。
その後は、友人たちとユーロを2試合パブで観戦。他にもやらなければならないことがあるのは分かりつつ、今だけの関係性、体験というものを今日は優先した。
夜23時からは一件日本の方とのMTG。とても素敵な出会いがあり、貴重な機会を作っていただけてとてもありがたかった。

・ユーロの盛り上がり
イギリスはユーロで大盛り上がりだ。学校には色々な国の生徒たちが所属しているため、ヨーロッパの生徒同士の仁義なき争いが日々繰り広げられている。時には一触即発のムードになることも笑
・自分からオープンマインドで行けば、人は応えてくれる
これは週末の仕事経験から感じたことなのだが、こちらから積極的に挨拶して、話しかけると、大抵の人が答えてくれる。自分を偽ることなくオープンマインドで向かっていけば、相手もそれに応えてくれる感覚。
特にイギリスの人は挨拶を基本返してくれるので、それが嬉しい。
・とにかく失敗を恐れず話しまくる
新しいフランス人のルームメイトはそれほど英語が得意ではないのだが、いつも全く躊躇せず、どんな人とも話そうとする。伝わらないことにストレスを感じているようにも見えず、とにかく場数を踏む。
そういう人は伸びるだろうし、そこを気にしないメンタリティが大切だなと。
加えて、海外の方は自己肯定感が高い人が多く、そうしたパーソナリティも言語習得にプラスの影響を与えているような気がする。
・様々なルーツを持つ生徒たち
ブラジル人のルームメイトの職業はエンジニアで、現在は2週間の休暇を取って英語学習をするためにイギリスに来ているとのこと。普段のスケジュールは、朝から昼まで働き、午後にムエタイのトレーニング、夜は大学に週6で通っているらしい。
他にもフランス人のクラスメイトは、オーストリアの東にある島国出身。現在そこでは内戦が起きており、本当に大変なのだそうだ。
イギリスに来てから様々なルーツを持った人たちと知り合うことができ、日本ではあまり聞かない経験を耳にすることも増えた。
そうした話を聞く度に感じることが多く、自分の視野を広げてくれているように感じる。
来週の目標
・英語を英語のまま理解する
映画などを見ていても、なんかこの翻訳ニュアンス違うなと思うことが増えてきた。そのため、英英辞書を使うなどして、英語を英語のまま理解できるようにしたい。講師の方もそうするべきだと言っていた。
・仕事関連の作業を進める
今週は新しいクラスに追いつくのに時間をかなり使ってしまったため、来週はもう少しここに時間を割きたいと思う。
