感動するストーリー：A Glass of Milk（NEW HORIZON 2 東京書籍）

　私が大好きなストーリーがついに教科書に掲載されました！中学２年生用に容易な表現が用いられ、内容も変更されている箇所がありますが、本当に感動します。指導方法も含め、紹介していきます。まずは、このお話の元となった動画からどうぞ。Check it out!

One day, a poor boy who was selling goods from door to door to pay his way through school, found he had only one thin dime left, and he was hungry. He decided he would ask for a meal at the next house. However, he lost his nerve when a lovely young woman opened the door.
Instead of a meal he asked for a drink of water. She thought he looked hungry so brought him a large glass of milk. He drank it so slowly, and then asked, How much do I owe you?”

You don’t owe me anything,” she replied. “Mother has taught us never to accept pay for a kindness.”

He said … “Then I thank you from my heart.”

As Howard Kelly left that house, he not only felt stronger physically, but his faith in God and man was strong also. He had been ready to give up and quit.

Many year’s later that same young woman became critically ill. The local doctors were baffled. They finally sent her to the big city, where they called in specialists to study her rare disease.

Dr. Howard Kelly was called in for the consultation. When he heard the name of the town she came from, a strange light filled his eyes.

Immediately he rose and went down the hall of the hospital to her room.

Dressed in his doctor’s gown he went in to see her. He recognized her at once.

He went back to the consultation room determined to do his best to save her life. From that day he gave special attention to her case.

After a long struggle, the battle was won.

Dr. Kelly requested the business office to pass the final bill to him for approval. He looked at it, then wrote something on the edge and the bill was sent to her room. She feared to open it, for she was sure it would take the rest of her life to pay for it all. Finally she looked, and something caught her attention on the side of the bill. She read these words …

“Paid in full with one glass of milk”

Tears of joy flooded her eyes as her happy heart prayed: “Thank You, God, that Your love has spread broad through human hearts and hands.”

　Once, a poor young boy was selling candy door-to-door.  He was earning money to go to school.  He was very hungry, but he had only a few coins.
  The boy went to a house to sell candy.  He knocked on the door and a woman opened it.  She said, "I have no money for candy."  She was not well-off herself.
  When the boy was about to leave, the woman said, "Wait."  She felt sorry for him because he looked very hungry.  So she brought him a glass of milk.

　リーディングでは、KWLメソッドを使っています。今回も、このメソッドを応用してみます。KWLのうち、KとWは読む前にシェアします。Lは読んだ後にシェアします。

Before Reading Activity

 　ある程度まとまった文章を読む場合は、読む前にブレインストーミングをすることが、読むことに対する動機付けをすることができると思っています。こんな風に始めてみます。
  Before  you start reading, it helps to talk about what you think might happen in the story.  Brainstorming helps you motivate to read.
【タイトルからQuestions】
Ex) Do you drink milk every day?
      Do you like milk?
【最初のイラストからQuestions】
Ex) What can you see in this picture?
      Who are they?
      Where are they?
      What are they doing?
      Why are they doing that?
      How are they feeling?

While Reading Activity

　【語彙理解】　
　１行に２つ以上知らない単語があると、内容を理解して読むことを十分に楽しむことが難しいです。とは言え、単に「apple ＝ りんご」のように単語リストを提示するだけでは終わりたくありません。語彙理解も対話的にアクティブに行います。こんな風に指示を出します。
Ex) Sound out unfamiliar words and look for clues in the pictures. Sometimes the words before and after an unknown word can help you work out what a difficult word means.
　After you’ve finished the story, go back to any words that you found tricky and talk about what they mean. This helps you to remember them.

After Reading Activity

【内容理解Questions】　
  教科書にも載っているようなQ＆Aや、True or False などを使って、内容理解を確かめます。これによって、あいまいに把握していた部分が明確になります。文法的に正確に理解できていなかった場合にも、発問することで理解を促すことができます。内容を理解するために、１文ずつ日本語に訳していくやり方はしません。

【リテリング】
　ジグソー法を使ってリテリングします。エキスパートグループで得た情報をオリジナルグループに戻ってシェアします。メンバーにわかりやすいように、自分の言葉を使って内容を伝えます。

【 Discussion 】
　さらに、内容に関してディスカッションをします。このステージが、リーディングの楽しい部分です。読んだことに対して感想や疑問をシェアします。最後に、「この物語の続きを考えてみよう」という課題を与えると、いろんなストーリーが誕生しておもしろいです。原作よりももっとユニークな内容を、スローラーナーさんが書いてきてくれたりして、嬉しくてびっくりします！また、「助けてもらった女性になって、医者になった男の子に手紙を書こう」反対に、「医者になった男の子になって、治療した女性へ手紙を書こう」というような課題を出すのも、脳と感情が結びつく、心に残る活動になります。

      2 What would you do when the boy asked you to buy a candy if you were         a young woman?
     3 What would you do if you were a doctor?
     4 What is kindness for you?
　 5 What is "A Glass of Milk" for you?
     6 What did you learn from this story?
