Dialogue with Futaba future high school students

Today's blog post is about the dialogue with Futaba future high school students which I organized.
先日自分が企画した、ふたば未来学園高校の生徒との意見交換についてです！

（前回のマンハッタンの私立小学校訪問）

1. ふたば未来学園って？

この高校は、東日本大震災後の２０１５年に福島県に新設された高校で、生徒さんの中には、震災で直接に被害を受けた子が数多くいます。
This school was established in 2015, after the Great Earthquake, and most of students' lives were directly affected by the earthquake, following tsunami and nuclear power plant accident.

彼ら彼女らは今回、震災の教訓を踏まえ、どのように自分達の地域を活性化させるかについて、再生エネルギー、メディアなど複数のテーマに分かれ、研究を行ってきました。

NYCに来る前には、東京で何百人もの観客の前で公演を行ったそうです

They have been doing research about how to revitalize Fukushima area, dividing students into multiple research topic such as renewable energy and media.
Before coming to NYC, they did a performance in front of hundreds of audience in Tokyo.

2. イベントの概要

まずはその内容を、コロンビア大学等の学生の前でプレゼン。

さすがにあまり普段しない経験で、ちょっと緊張していたような表情。

でも、パワポがとってもわかりやすく作ってあったし、それに皆の自分の言葉で伝えようという気持ちが伝わってきて、とっても印象深かったです。

「福島の外からは福島全体として偏見の目で見られる。福島の中では地域次第で偏見の目で見られる。」というコメントが自分の心に突き刺さりました。

In the first session, high school students made a presentation to Columbia University international students.
I saw some nervous faces maybe because of this rare experience, but their powerpoint was very easy to understand and what was most impressive was their struggle to try to convey their own messages in English.

I just wanna share one word which struck me; "We Fukushima residents experience prejudice and bias as a whole by those living outside Fukushima, whereas we also suffer from these based on which area we are living even by those living in Fukushima."

今回参加してくれた大人側には、３月中旬の春休みの間に私とともにジャパン・トリップに参加する学生もいて（トリップでは福島又は宮城を訪問予定）、とても真剣な表情で聞き入っていました。
Some of the participants are going to Japan this mid-March to study public policies including Tohoku area (Fukushima or Miyagi), so they listened to this presentation very seriously.

3. グループディスカッションの様子

その後は約６人×３の小グループに分かれ、懇談。

大人側は私の通っているSIPAだけでなく、Computer ScienceやTeachers College、Arts and ScienceそしてBarnard Collegeの卒業生などかなり多様。

In the second session, I divided all of them into three small groups (6 people in each group)
Backgrounds are diverse; not only SIPA, but also Computer Science, Teachers College, Arts and Science, and alumnus of Barnard College.

高校生の皆は時に日本人の通訳の助けを借りつつも、なるべく英語でコミュニケーションを取ろうと頑張っていました。えらい！！
High school students, sometimes with the help of interpretation, tried to communicate and interact with adults in English. Excellent job!!

元校長先生からは、学校楽しい？毎日どんなことしてるの？といった逆質問も飛び出しました。
One participant, who was a former principal, asked them about whether they are enjoying schools or their daily routines.

今回の訪問は政府側からの支援もあって実現したそうです。（この高校は文科省のスーパー・グローバル・ハイスクールに指定されています。）

高校生のときに、日本トップの進学校と言われる学校に通いながら、５０人１クラスの一方向の授業だけを受け、ディスカッションましてや海外の大人との交流など皆無だった私にとっては、本当に羨ましい限りでした。

This visit is actully funded by the government because this school is designated as Super Global High School.
I, who went to one of the top high schools in Japan but did not have such an opporunity (basically listening to teacher's one-way instruction in a classroom of 50 students), am really jealous of them.

4. おわりに

最後にコメントを求められたので、大したことも言える立場ではないのですがこんなことを。。。

英語が思うように話せないもどかしさ、自分も昨年の夏に始めて海外に住んで経験しました。

何か言おうとしても日本語を介さないと出てこないし、相手が何しゃべってるかわからないし・・・

でも、沢山の失敗を繰り返しながら、英語を英語としてそのままインプットし、アウトプットすること、毎日練習すること（授業でプレゼンがある時は、大体５回程度家で娘を唯一の観客として練習してます。笑）を通じて、少しずつ、ほんとに少しずつ、ブレイクスルーはないんだけど、前に進んでいる気がしています。

若い時にこういう経験が出来るのは羨ましいこと。それを今度の糧にしてくれるといいなと思います。

After this dialogue, I gave some feedback to them.

I also experienced the same frustration that I wanted to say something but could not because of language problem when I moved here.
I was alway translating Japanese into English and could not understand my friends' too fast English.
However, through many mistakes and failures, I am now getting accustomed to use English without using Japanese. In addition, my preparation for presentations (when I have a presentation in class, I practice at least five times in front of my daughter, who is the only audience) made me slightly more confident in speaking in English, although not a breakthrough.

I'm pretty sure this experience would be a turning point to them!

教育に携わる者として、こういう機会で参加者の満足そうな顔を見ると、ああやって良かったって改めて思います。

また、機会を自分から作り出していきたいと思います！

As an education guy, I'm really glad to see satisfaction on participants' faces, which makes me feel like worth strenuous efforts.
I'll create as many opportunities like this as I can!
