October in Kyoto: Jidai Matsuri Festival held under clear blue sky

October in Kyoto 2023
On October 22, under the pleasant autumn skies, one of Kyoto's three major festivals, the Jidai Matsuri, took place. It began in 1895 (Meiji 28) as a festival of the Heian Shrine, commemorating the 1,100th anniversary of the Heian Capital's founding. The procession vividly revives the clothing and customs from the Meiji Restoration, all the way back to the Heian period, as it parades down the city's main streets in a splendid spectacle. Undoubtedly, the attire of the Heian nobility, with their twelve-layered ceremonial robes, stood out the most. I believe this is a testament to the traditional craftsmanship and artistry that Kyoto, as "Miyako", has nurtured throughout its history.
According to the Kyoto Shimbun, this year's participants included three generations of families and citizens with foreign roots.
I sense diversity in the present day within this traditional festival.
