May in Kyoto: Aoi festival
May in Kyoto 2023
One of Kyoto's three major festivals, the 'Aoi Matsuri,' was postponed due to light rain from May 15th to May 16th, marking its return after a four-year hiatus. On a sunny day, even the former Emperor and Empress attended as spectators. Tourists seemed disappointed with the postponement. The decision to postpone was made by the preservation society to avoid risks due to rain and the associated repair costs. The procession includes 500 people adorned in meticulously researched costumes from the Heian period, dating back 1,500 years. Repare costs can reach several million yen for the costumes, ox-drawn carriages, horses and more. Continuing such traditional events can be quite challenging. That is Kyoto’s responsibility.
