A Case of Wasei-Eigo 〜和製英語の罠〜

Spotted a “lost in translation through shortening” error on a chalk board at a coffee shop.

English words are frequently shortened or made into 和製英語　(wasei-eigo, or “English words made in Japan”) .

“Illust” is one of them, and is pronounced “illasuto”. Since this was written at the bottom of a chalk board, referring to an illustration (chalk board art), people would probably be able to tell what it refers to. Still, it was our first time to see it written out in English!

「イラスト」は「イラストレーション」を省略した和製英語ですが、英語ではこのように省略しません。

ただ、イラストの下に書いてあり、その後に “by” が書かれていたので、「イラストレーション by [人の名前]」だと想像できそうですね！(「nさん」のお名前が短いので、一瞬名前だと気づきにくいかもしれませんが…💦笑)

📝もしイラストレーターさんのお名前が「n.」さんであれば、ピリオドが入りますが、「n」さんであれば、ピリオドは不要です。
