Found a case of “lost in translation” on a warning sign at the station. 🚧😮

It was placed on a scaffolding of the construction site, and was meant to warn people not to lean against it. Unfortunately, it does not convey the message and we were not able to figure out how it was translated this way.

However, we are pleased to inform you that the wording has been modified! 🙌

Maya (one of the editors of this account) has recently discovered this change, as you can see in the photo below!

As a side story — Maya’s father (who has published books on English) had politely told the station staff that the English sentence is not correct, and it may even have reputational risk.

We are not sure if this contributed to this change, but either way, it’s great that the sentence makes perfect sense now! 😉

駅の工事中エリアに貼ってあった「注意書き」のまちがい翻訳。⚠️

歩行者への注意を呼びかけている文言……のはずなのですが、意味のわからない英文になってしまっていました…。無理矢理訳してみると、「壁に適用されていない」のようになり、歩行者に正しいメッセージが伝わりません……。

……と思っていたら！良いニュースです！📣

なんと、文言が正しく修正されていましたーっ！！！

マヤ (このアカウントの編集者です) が、その後文言が変更されていることに気がつきました (下の写真をご覧ください！)

現在は、正確に伝わる完璧英語になっています！駅の方々、さすがですね。😉✨

ちなみにここで余談ですが…
マヤの父 (英語教育関係の仕事をしています) が、以前、駅の担当者に元の英文の誤りについて (やんわーーーり) 伝えたらしいのです (笑)。

これが修正のきっかけになったのかは不明ですが (笑)、どちらにしても「伝わる注意書き」になってよかったですね！🤗
