スキヤワビスケ　茶人がその花色と佇まいを愛した侘助系椿

ツツジ目、ツバキ科、ツバキ属の常緑低木


淡桃色の上品な色合いの花色と、猪口咲の
一重花の控えめなその花形が茶室に合うと
された侘助系のツバキとなる。


戦国の世が終わりを告げた江戸の時代とは
身分や階級もなく誰しもが、花の珍品集め
に奔走した時代である。そんな中で茶人が
この花こそが茶の世界に相応しいものだと
されたのがこの『数寄屋侘助』であった。



『数寄屋侘助』のこの名の由来となっている
のは、茶事を好む者を指し『数寄者』と呼び
その趣味が高じて母屋から独立した位置に
建てられた茶室の事を『数寄屋』と呼ぶ事に
由来している。この名の称号が付くという
事は、とても名誉なことなのである。

An evergreen shrub in the order Ericales, family Theaceae, and genus Camellia.

Sukiya Wabisuke is a Wabisuke-type camellia known for its delicate, pale pink flowers and modest, single-petaled choko-zaki (sake-cup-shaped) blossoms. Its refined appearance made it particularly well-suited for tea rooms.

During the Edo period, after the turbulent Sengoku era ended, people of all backgrounds—regardless of social class—became passionate about collecting rare and unusual flowers. Amid this trend, tea masters recognized Sukiya Wabisuke as a camellia that perfectly embodied the spirit of the tea ceremony.

The name “Sukiya Wabisuke” is derived from the term “sukimono” (数寄者), which refers to those who are devoted to the way of tea. The word “sukiya” (数寄屋) originally described a separate tea room built apart from the main residence, emphasizing its special role in tea culture.

Having the name “Sukiya” attached to this camellia is a mark of great honor, signifying its deep connection to the aesthetics and philosophy of the tea ceremony.
