ウラク　江戸の名は太郎冠者、京都での名は有楽

有楽 （ウラク）

ツツジ目、ツバキ科、ツバキ属、の中に於いて
早咲の品種となっている。

そんな早咲椿である特性を、狂言に掛け合わせ
最初に口上を述べる登場人物である『太郎冠者』
（タロウカジャ）の名で呼んだのが江戸の地方。


一方で京都でのその名称には『有楽』（ウラク）
の名がついているが、織田信長（オダノブナガ）
の弟の織田長益（オダナガマス）が最も愛した
椿という事に由来している。この長益は、茶人
とし千利休（センノリキユウ）に茶道を学んだ
利休十哲のひとりでもある。


この有楽のツバキに魅せられ惚れ込んだ事から
自身の名を織田有楽斎（オダウラクサイ）とし
創始した茶道の流派にも有楽流（ウラクリュウ）
としたとされる。


西の『有楽』、東の『太郎冠者』、どちらも粋な
名がついたツバキである。また、淡い桃色花弁
の侘助系という事で『淡侘助』（ウスワビスケ）
の名でも呼ばれている。


現在、世にある総ての侘助（ワビスケ）の産みの
親と云われているのが、このツバキであり侘助
の原型といえる、古典椿のひとつである。


そんな歴史あるツバキながら、丈夫で比較的に
育成しやすいもので、人気の高い品種となる。

今回は服部緑地都市緑化植物園の中で撮影した
画像を掲載したものであるが、なるほど改めて
この侘助系の花の美しさには見惚れてしまう。

Uraku (Urakutsubaki)


A member of the order Ericales, family Theaceae, and genus Camellia, this is an early-blooming variety of camellia.


In Edo (present-day Tokyo), this characteristic of early blooming was associated with the opening character in Kyogen performances who delivers the first lines—Tarokaja. Thus, the camellia became known in that region as Tarokaja.


On the other hand, in Kyoto, it is called Uraku, a name derived from Oda Nagamasu, the younger brother of Oda Nobunaga. This camellia was said to be Nagamasu’s favorite. A devoted tea master, Nagamasu studied under Sen no Rikyu and was recognized as one of the Rikyu Jittetsu (Ten Disciples of Rikyu).


Enchanted by this camellia, he took the name Oda Urakusai and founded a school of tea ceremony, which he named Uraku-ryu.


Thus, in the west, it is called Uraku, while in the east, it is known as Tarokaja—both names reflecting a refined cultural heritage. Additionally, due to its delicate pink petals and its classification within the Wabisuke camellia lineage, it is also referred to as Usu-Wabisuke (Pale Wabisuke).


This camellia is considered the origin of all Wabisuke camellias known today and is regarded as a prototype of the Wabisuke variety—a true classical camellia.


Despite its historical significance, it is a hardy and relatively easy-to-grow plant, making it a highly popular variety.


The images included here were taken at the Hattori Ryokuchi Urban Greening Botanical Garden. Once again, I found myself captivated by the exquisite beauty of this Wabisuke camellia.
