ディクテーションの学習効果 -映画「黄昏」のシナリオおこしの思い出-＝学習方法のお話（その18）＝
映画"On Golden Pond (1981)"の40年前の聴き起こし作業
"On Golden Pond"は、そもそもはブロードウェイで上演された戯曲で、私がサンフランシスコに滞在していた1981年に映画になりました。サンフランシスコでも購読していた雑誌タイムに特集記事も掲載されました。
完全に一致しているわけではありませんが、そもそもが戯曲なので舞台のセリフと映画シナリオとが重複するところがあります。1981年度版のペーパバックも購入し、読了後、母語話者の協力を得て、映画"On Golden Pond" (1981) の台本おこしを40年以上も前の1984年から1985年にかけて完成させたことがあります。当時そうした経験からわかったことを以下書きます。
英語が聴き取れないときの二つの問題
英語が聴き取れない理由として、大雑把にいって、二つの問題があります。
ひとつは、テキストを見てもわからない未知の語句の場合
そもそも聞いたことも読んだこともない語句の場合。この場合、そもそもテキスト文字で見たとしてもわからないのですから、これが聴き取りで聴き取れるはずもありません。「黄昏」の場合、以下がそのいくつかの例になります。
〇take the stern （船尾をとる）〈船尾をとるとは船尾を担当しろということ。具体的には後ろにまわれということ〉
〇…haul my ass out to Wyoming or Puerto Rico or...（ワイオミングとかプエルトリコとかに急いでいかないと）〈haul my assのassは卑語
。haulは「重いものを運ぶ」という意〉
〇Now that I'm out of hot air,（もう無駄話は終わり）〈hot air は、俗語で、無駄話、ナンセンスの意。〉
〇They call this Purgatory Cove, boy（煉獄の入り江と呼ばれてるとこさ）
〇starboard〈right〉, port〈left〉
〇I forgot you're a hot shot boat driver.（ボートの運転の名人てこと、忘れてた）
〇What are you doing with a dotty old son of a bitch like me.（私のようなまともじゃないどうしようもない奴に、どう対応しているのか）
〇Where do you juvenile delinquents think you're off too?（あなたたち非行少年たちはどこに出かけるつもり？）
〇exert yourself（努力する）
〇How's the angina?（狭心症の具合はどう？）
もうひとつは、テキストで見たら既知の語句であるとわかる場合
それから、文字におこしてみると、なんだそんな簡単なことを言っているのと、既知の単語である場合。このときの問題は、純粋に音の問題ということになります。音と一言でいっても、リズム・スピードの問題が大きいと思います。抑揚があり、速い、英語のリズム・スピードについていけないという課題になります。とりわけ、けんか腰だったり、感情が高ぶって早口になると、ついていけません。スピードと、 さらに、take on （相手にする）などの句動詞 (phrasal verbs)が課題となります。また、スピードがゆっくりでも、ささやくような語りや、映画「黄昏」のように年配者の発話となるとわかりづらさが増します。まぁ結局慣れていないから慣れが大切ということになるわけです。
さらにこれに母語話者の冗談が展開されると私たちは煙に巻かれて、置いていかれることになります。妻のエシルをどうやって手に入れたのとビリーが聞いたときのノーマンの答えがオートミール箱の景品用の上ぶたで獲得したんだというジョークになると、全くついていけないということになるわけです。
劇場用の台本「黄昏」の語彙水準は日常語
ところで、先に述べたように、「黄昏」は、そもそも劇場用の台本であり、専門用語が出てくるような内容ではありません。語彙水準は日常語が多く、語彙が特殊なわけでもありません。読んでもわからない水準の語彙は相対的に少ないカテゴリーの作品と言えます。
それでも聞き取れない箇所が山ほど出てきます。以下は聞いてわかりませんでしたが、テキストで見たらわかる例です。
〇Norman : I don't hear a thing.（何も聞こえん）
〇Ethel: ...the canoe off the porch...（カヌーをポーチからおろして）
〇I'm qualified to...（〜の資格がある）
〇I didn't even know they had gas back then.（その当時にガソリンがあったなんて知らなかった）

〇My whole goddam body's fallin' apart.（自分の身体全体がバラバラになってしまう）
〇Sometimes I can't even go to the bathroom when I want to,..（行きたいときにトイレに行けないことも時々あるんだ）
〇Let me tell you, I can take on both of you punks.（いいか、お前ら若造の両方相手してやってもいいんだぞ）
〇If I take a wrong turn, and wind up in Michigan or some place, be sure you let me know.（間違えてミシガンとか別の場所に行ったら教えてくれ）
〇You're my knight in shining armor.（あなたは、光り輝く鎧に身をつつんだ私の騎士）
〇I haven't the vaguest idea.（これっぽっちもわからないわ）
〇Wouldn't it be nice if we could all get along this time?（今回仲良くやれたらステキじゃない？）
〇Well, they said they'd be here when they get here.（そうね、到着したら着くだろうと、言ったんだ）

〇We play serious Parcheesi around here. I let Norman win every week or so just to keep his spirits up.（ここでは私たちボードゲームを真剣に遊んでいるのよ。毎週ノーマンに勝たせてあげて、彼のやる気を維持してるの）

弱音の発話や基礎動詞による句動詞と文化性がリスニングを難しくする
リスニングの問題としては、言語体験・語彙力や聴解力のパワーが足りないため、理解が不安定という問題はたくさん起こります。
冠詞や助動詞の省略形、現在形と進行形など、言語学習的には、つまり文法的には充分わかっているはずなのに、音として弱音のために、聴き取りで冠詞が抜けたり、現在完了の短縮形が抜けたり、スピードが速くて be able to が抜けたりします。学校の試験で出題されればわかっている基礎文法でも、言語活動の中でしっかりと定着していないという弱点をさらけ出すことになります。
これは、日常会話は一語一語ハッキリと発話することなく、母語話者どうし、分かり合えている箇所は、いわばサボって、弱音化したり、早口になるためです。
同様に、put、have などの big wordsでない英語のいわばヤマト言葉の聴き取りが、発話の時間も短く、句動詞に慣れていない問題があって、当時の私はやわらかいヤマト言葉の句動詞に弱いことがわかりました。孫がいないからセイヤ―という由緒ある名前も途絶えてしまうと皮肉まじりにぼやくノーマンに対して受け答えをする妻エシルの "Well, we'll take it out in style" （そうね、なら堂々と幕を引きましょうよ）がわかりにくかったのは、やわらかいヤマト言葉の句動詞に馴れていなかったということです。
さらに、文化的には、ハッピーバースデーの歌は、"And many more!" とつけ加えるのが通常であるとか、ボードゲーム Parcheesi (Parcheezie)など、合州国の文化を当然にも知らないということがありました。
また英語の母語話者が名前で呼び合うことはよく知られていますが、この名前の聴き取りがむずかしい。湖畔のガスステーションで Sumner という名前が出てきますが、Sumner という名前には馴染みがありませんでした。これが個人名か家族名なのかもわからないのが普通の日本人の感覚でしょう。英語文化では、個人名か家族名かは移行してしまうものなのですが。
また、傾向として、文頭のリスニングに弱いということも指摘できるかもしれません。
それから、音として、なんとなく推測がつくものもありますが、意味も推測できない例。これもパワー不足からのことで、不安定さを増長します。
punks は知っていたし、nit-wits も、いじわるな若者たちをnit-witsと呼んでいるのでこうした類のものと推測がつきました。でも、おそらくdaddy から来ているのでしょうが、Dadder はわかりませんでした。こうした変種は、いろいろとあって慣れが必要です。sir の変種の "sirree" も登場していましたが、全くついていけませんでした。

よく知らない単語の一例は、以下。
繰り返しになりますが、いわゆるインテリらしさをセイヤー氏に出すために少し気取った語彙やもって回った表現を演技者に使わせてはいますが、「黄昏」の語彙水準は日常語の範囲と言えます。

正確なシナリオ原本があるとか、母語話者の協力を得る環境があるとか、必要な学習環境や学習条件はありますが、自分で台本を聴き起こし(dictation)をしてみると、弱点がよくわかるようになります。
ディクテーションはオススメの学習方法のひとつです。
以下は、かなり冗長になりますが、当時のディクテーションノート正誤表から。

まず固有名詞とキーワード、そして代名詞や短縮形などパターン表現に慣れること
まず、固有名詞やキーワードをつかむこと。
この点では、名前や地名などの固有名詞は難しいのですが、まず固有名詞をつかみましょう。
人名や地名、会話なら、聞き返して、発音も確認することです。
キーワードは、基礎語彙をキチンと学ぶこと。これは学校でも、自主学習でも、真面目に取り組めば、取り組むほど、着実に身につきます。
リスニングでは、キーワードは必ず強調されますから、初学者でもそれほど難しいわけではありません。単語力があれば、なんとかついて行くことができるでしょう。
むしろ難しいのは、He's, She's, his, her, I'll, I'd, It'll, itなどの、弱音化された短縮形や代名詞、what, when, howなどの疑問詞や、ifなどの接続詞。fill her upなどの句動詞です。また機能語と呼ばれる冠詞です。これらはパターン化していますが、早口で弱音で発話されることが多く、慣れていないと太刀打ちできません。dadder, sirreeなど、変形もあるので、音として学ぶ必要があります。
映画「黄昏」や「卒業」も収録されている"Best American Screenplays"（1986）というシナリオ本を購入したことがありますが、そうしたテキストを速読するリーディングもリスニングに役立ちます。
