Wedding Anniversary （結婚記念日）

The 11th of February is the day of our wedding anniversary. It is very easy to remember the day. It is also a national holiday in Japan. A few days before the day, usually, I am aware that it is a national holiday, and that I do not have to work. And then, I recall that it is also the day of our wedding anniversary. So, I have never forgotten, and will never forget, it.
My wife has never forgotten, and will never forget, it, either. She seems to remember the day as I remember. One day before the day, suddenly, my wife began to tell me that tomorrow was a holiday. At the same time, she said, ‘ It is also the day of our wedding anniversary.’ It was as if she had said so to check if I had remembered.
So, I replied to her at once, ‘Yes, it is.’ Then, I asked her how many years we had been married. Then, she said, ‘ I do not remember.’ At the moment, I did not know, either. Probably, it was the 38th.
No matter how many times we have celebrated the day, we have done nothing special for it. We have never dined out to celebrate it. Also, neither of us has given a present to the other. We have just spent the day just confirming each other that the 11th of February was the day of our wedding anniversary. And we will not do anything special for the anniversary days to come, either.
As long as I can live in peace, I have nothing I want to do more than now. Nothing is more precious than a peaceful life.

　2月11日はボクたちの結婚記念日です。とても覚えやすい日です。日本の祝日でもあるからです。その日が来る数日前になると、その日が祝日で、仕事をしなくてもいいことに気付きます。と同時に、結婚記念日でもあることを思い出します。なので、この日を忘れたことはないし、これからも忘れることはないでしょう。
　妻もこの日を忘れたことはないし、これからも忘れることはないでしょう。ボクが覚えているように、妻もその日のことを覚えています。この前、記念日の日の前日に、妻が突然、「明日は休だね。」と言い始めました。と同時に、「結婚記念日でもあるのよ」とも言われました。まるで、ボクが覚えているかどうかを確認するために言ったようでした。
　ボクは、即座に「そうだね。」と答え、「何回目の記念日？」と聞いてみました。すると、妻の返事は、「さーね。」でした。その瞬間は、ボクもわかりませんでした。たぶん、38回目だったと思います。
　記念日を迎えても、特別なことは何もしません。外食することもなければ、お互いにプレゼントを贈ることもありません。ただ、2月11日が結婚記念日であることを確認し合って、その日を過ごします。これからの記念日も特別なことはしないでしょう。
　平穏に暮らせる限り、今以上にしたいことはありません。平穏以上に大切なものはありません。
