Telegram （電報）

Telegram. It came to my mind when I was thinking of what to write about on my blog. I have rarely used it. Probably, only a few times in my life. I had used it to send a message to a honeymoon couple at a wedding party. It was very popular in old times. At that time, there was no other means, such as Line and other SNS.
But I had used it for other purpose, which might have been very rare. It was when I was the second year of a course at college. I was busy with studying for the year-end exams. I had a lot of subjects to study. So, I worked hard, and I was ready to take the exams for most of them. But I only had a subject, the theory of securities, which I was not motivated to study at all. At that time, I had no interest in securities, or shares. They were a gamble to me, and I could not understand why I had to study them at college. So, I could not find how to study them for the exam, and I was frustrated with what to do with it. Then, all of sudden, I recalled one of my best classmates who is good at the subject. So, I tried to contact him, but I had no chance to see him at the college. Nor did I know his phone number. So, I tried to find a way to contact him, and found that the best way was a telegram. I sent it asking him to contact me urgently, and I got his phone call immediately. So, I got what to do for, and managed to pass, the exam for the subject.
It has been about half a century since I used the telegram. During the period, I remained having no interest in shares, and I had never bought shares. But I have recently had an interest in it and come to buy some. It is one of signs that I have changed. I now have more time than before since I had retired.

　電報。ブログで何を書こうかと考えていたとき、これが頭に浮かびました。電報は、ほとんど使ったことがありません。おそらく、人生で数回だけだと思います。新婚カップルの披露宴に、メッセージを送るのに使ったことがあります。昔は、電報は人気がありました。当時はLINEや他のSNSのような手段がなかったためです。
　でも、これ以外の目的で使ったことがありました。それは大学2年生の時でした。期末試験に追われていた時です。試験科目がたくさんあったので、必死に勉強して、ほとんどの科目は試験を受ける準備が整っていました。でも、有価証券論だけはまったくやる気が起きませんでした。その当時、ボクは、証券、つまり株にまったく興味がなかったのです。ボクにとって、株はギャンブルで、大学で勉強する理由が分からなかったのです。だから、試験の勉強法も分からず、どうしようかとイライラしていました。そんな時、突然、この科目が得意なクラスメートのことを思い出しました。すぐに彼に連絡を取ろうとしたのですが、大学で会う機会もなく、電話番号も知らなかったのです。そこで、彼に連絡する方法を考えていた時、電報という方法を見つけたのです。「急いで連絡が欲しい。」と電報を打ったら、すぐに電話がかかってきました。これで、この科目の勉強方法がわかり、試験もパスできました。
　この電報を打ってから約半世紀。その間、株には興味がないままで、株を買ったこともありませんでした。でも、最近になって株に興味を持ち、買うようになりました。自分が変わったサインのひとつで。引退してから、以前より時間が増えたのです。
