October 20, 2024: Extreme Heat （猛暑）
Japan was faced with an extreme heat this summer. Tokyo had 19 extremely hot days and 61 sweltering days this summer. It means that Tokyo was in sweltering heat for about 3 months, a quarter of the year. And Tokyo is still having sweltering days in October. The hottest day was 8 July with 35.8C this year. It is no doubt that Tokyo had a historically hot summer this year, and no one would argue with that.
But I could not believe that the hottest day was only 35.8C. It should have been much higher and at least over 40C. I was once in a hotter weather about 30 years ago. At the time, I was in the Costa del Sol in Spain for summer holidays. The area had such a beautiful beach and good food that I enjoyed the holidays very much. But I was faced with an extreme heat of about 40C in the afternoon. It was so hot that I could not go out of the hotel for sightseeing in the afternoon and had no choice but to stay in my hotel. I was in my room or on the poolside of my hotel in the afternoon. In fact, it was so hot that no one was in public places in the afternoon. It was late afternoon that I managed to go out there.
It was an extreme heat, but it was not as uncomfortable as I had imagined. It is because the area had a dry weather and was easier to live in than I had imagined. It means that I managed to have comfortable stays there as long as I was in shaded areas. So, I had to go to a poolside early morning to keep a shaded area for enjoyable holidays.
On the other hand, Japan had a very uncomfortable heat this summer. But Tokyo's hottest day was only with 35.8C, which was less than that of the Costa del Sol. But it was much more humid. This means that whether I feel comfortable or not depends on the humidity, no matter where I am.
この夏、日本は猛暑に見舞われました。東京では、猛暑日が19日、真夏日が61日もありました。つまり、1年の4分の1が猛暑日か真夏日だったのです。そして10月に入っても真夏日が続いています。東京で一番暑かった日は35.8度を記録した7月8日でした。この夏は、歴史的な暑さであったことは間違いありません。
でも、最も暑かった日でも、35.8度しかなかったのは変に感じます。気温はもっと高い気がするのです。ボクは、30年ほど前に、もっと気温が高かった天気の中にいたことがあります。その時、ボクは、夏休みで、スペインのコスタ・デル・ソルにいました。とても美しい海岸線とおいしい食べ物のお陰で、楽しい夏休みを過ごせました。でも、午後になると気温が40度まで上がり、あまりの暑さに、午後は観光することができず、ホテルにこもるしかありませんでした。自分の部屋かホテルのプールサイドにいるしかなかったのです。実際、あまりの暑さに午後は公共の場所に誰もいませんでした。夕方にならないと、外にはでられませんでした。
暑いのは暑かったのですが、湿度は低かったです。この地域は乾燥しており、過ごしやすかったです。日陰にいればなんとか快適に過ごせました。そのため、休み楽しむために、早朝からプールサイドに行って、日陰を確保するほどでした。
その一方、今年の日本の夏は不快な暑さでした。東京の最高気温は35.8度で、コスタ・デル・ソルより低かったです。でも、湿度が高かったためです。どこに行こうが、快適さの決め手は、湿度です。
