March 29, 2024: Pale Pink （桜色）

‘Sakura iro’, or 'pale pink' in English. It comes from the colour of the flower of the cherry tree. It always reminds me of Sakura mochi, a traditional cake in Japan. I always take it around this time of year because it is now in season to enjoy it. I love the pale pink colour and the flavour of the cake, and with the arrival of spring, I am always to tempted to enjoy it. I can get it in every traditional Japanese cake shop around this time of year. But my best is the one from a family-run shop near my flat. It is a small shop, but the cake tastes much better than in any other shop. It also has other Japanese cakes like ohagi, daifuku mochi and so forth. All the cakes are always good and never disappoint me. In Japan, we have several days a year to eat the cakes as a custom, and on those days, the shop always has a long queue of those who want to buy the cakes.
It also has another great cake, a sticky rice ball with clams, or Asari Okowa in Japanese. Among her cakes is the one that I love the most. It has the product of the best balance between the clams and shoyu sauce. When I go to the shop, I never leave the shop without buying it.
The shop should be facing increases in the price of ingredients of the cakes. And it should be forced to raise the prices of the cakes. I am ready to accept the hikes to some extent. It is more important to me that the shop keeps doing business. I really hope that it will stay open forever, close down and never be like the cherry blossoms that will soon fall.

「桜色」、英語では「ペールピンク」。桜の花の色から来ています。この色を見聞きすると、和菓子の桜餅をいつも思い出します。今の時期は、桜餅を楽しむ季節で、この時期は必ず食べます。桜餅の桜色と味が大好きで、春の訪れとともに、桜餅が食べたくなります。桜餅は、この季節になると、どこの和菓子屋でも買えます。でも、家の近くにある家族経営の店のものが最高です。小さな店ですが、どの店よりもおいしいです。この店には、おはぎや大福餅など他の和菓子もあり、どれも美味しく、期待を裏切りません。日本では年に数回、和菓子を食べる習慣の日があります。その日は、この店はいつも和菓子を買い求める人で長蛇の列ができます。
　この店にはとてもおいしいものがもう一つあります。アサリ入りのもち米のおにぎり、「アサリおこわ」です。店の和菓子の中で、これが一番好きです。アサリと醤油のバランスが最高です。この店に行くと、これを買わずに店を出ることはありません。
　この店は今、材料の値上げに直面しているはずです。そして、和菓子も値上げせざるを得ないはずです。値上げは、ある程度受け入れる用意があります。それよりも、この店が営業を続けてくれることの方が大事です。まもなく散る桜のようにならず、ずっと営業を続け、閉店しないことを願うばかりです。
