June 18, 2023: Japanese Particle ‘Yori’（日本語の助詞、「より」）

I always read various kinds of writings such as articles on ‘note’ and news. Sometimes I have found words that are difficult to understand. Most of them are the ones that I did not know or was not familiar with. In such cases, I always check a dictionary or the internet for what they mean. However, I have a word that I have often seen but cannot still get used to. The word is the Japanese particle ‘yori’. It is close to the English word 'from' and is used to represent the starting point of something. For example, we use it to say, ‘Osaka yori Kyoto’ (from Kyoto to Osaka). I have seen the word used a lot in some business writings, such as emails and other messages. Before I saw it for the first time, I had never used or had seen the word. So I was very confused with it when I saw it. And I could not understand the message for a moment. I read the sentence with the word a few times and managed to understand the message. Since then, I have had to see the word whenever I receive messages from some people, and am still struggling to get used to it.
So I looked into the messages and found that the senders came from the same town. They seem to use the word to express the starting point. They use it as something like a dialect.

　日ごろ、ノートの記事やニュースなど様々な文章を読んでいます。文章を読んでいて、違和感を持つ言葉に出会うことがよくあります。大半は、ボクが知らないかなじみのない言葉です。そうした場合は、辞書やネットで調べます。でも、見慣れても強く違和感をもつ言葉があります。それが格助詞の「より」です。この言葉は、英語の「from」に近く、起点を表す言葉です。例えば、「京都より大阪へ。」なとど言うときに、「より」を使います。この言葉が仕事でよく登場します。一部の人たちから送られてくる、仕事のメールやＬＩＮＥなどでこの言葉が頻発します。ボクは、この言葉を使ったこともなく、またほとんど見たこともなかったので、初めて見た時は戸惑いました。はじめは、「より」をどう解釈してよいかわからず、一瞬、文章を理解できませんでした。何度か読み返すうちに、理解できるようになりました。それからというもの、、一部の人たちから送られて来る文書には必ずこの言葉が入っており、いまだに違和感は消えません。
　この言葉が使われている複数の人の文章を分析の結果、共通項をありました。出身地が近いのです。この地域では、起点の格助詞として「より」を使っているようです。一種の方言ですね。
