July 3, 3023: Nishikyo-ku in Kyoto （京都の西京区）

The other day, I was asked by my wife how to pronounce my permanent residence. It seemed to her that it was easy to read but not easy to pronounce. In fact, it has Kanji words which can be pronounced in different ways. That is the name of a ward in Kyoto, ’西京区’. It can be read as nishikyo-ku or saikyo-ku. I was aware of it when I was asked by my wife. So I checked it seriously for the first time in my life and found that it should be pronounced as ‘Nishikyo-ku’.
To tell you the truth, I was not sure about how to pronounce it until that day. In my mind, I had always pronounced it as ‘saikyo-ku’. It was a shame but I had a reason for the mistake. The ward name did not exist when I was in Kyoto, and it was created after I left Kyoto. So I did not care about how it was pronounced, as it did not matter to me. I had my family register with the address sent to me several times. But I could not figure out how to pronounce it since it had no phonetic guide. Another reason is that when I was in Kyoto, I had used to pronounce it as saikyo. I learnt it from other names in Kyoto. For example, there was a high school with the name of ‘西京商業’, and it was pronounced as ‘Saikyo Shogyo’. I was so used to it that it was natural for me to pronounce ‘西京’ as saikyo.
Logically thinking, I can understand why the ward is pronounced as ‘Nishikyo-ku’. It is located in the western part of Kyoto. In other words, nishikyo means the west of Kyoto.

　先日、妻にボクの本籍地の読み方を尋ねられました。彼女からすると、字は読めるけど、発音がわからないらしいです。確かに、本籍には、色々な発音の仕方がある漢字が含まれています。それが、「西京区」です。「にしきょうく」とも「さいきょうく」とも読めます。妻に言われて気付いたので、生まれて初めて、発音の仕方を真剣に調べました。そしたら、「にしきょうく」でした。
　実をいうと、この日まで、この読み方に確信がありませんでした。それどころか、「さいきょうく」と思っていたのです。お恥ずかしい話なのですが、理由があります。まず、ボクが京都にいたころは、西京区は存在していませんでした。ボクが京都を離れた後にできた区です。そのため、発音の仕方についてあまり気にしたことがありませでした。ボクにとっては、どうでいいもいいことだったのです。何度か、戸籍謄本を取り寄せたことがありますが、謄本にはフリガナがないため、読み方を確認できませんでした。もう一つの理由は、京都に居る時は、「西京」を「さいきょう」と読むことに慣れていたからです。他の名称で「さいきょう」という読み方を覚えたからです。例えば、その当時、「西京商業」という高校があったのですが、これは「さいきょうしょうぎょう」と呼ばれていました。従って、「西京」は「さいきょう」と読むのが自然だったのです。
論理的に考えると、「西京区」は、なぜ「にしきょうく」と読むがわかります。この区は、京都市の西方にあるからです。つまり、「西京」は、京都の西という意味でした。
