August 23, 2024: Real New Note of Ten Thousand Japanese Yen, Notes in Europe （新１万円の実物、欧州の紙幣）

The other day, I have seen the real new banknote of ten thousand Japanese yen for the first time. When I was in my own room, my wife specially came to the room to show it to me. At first sight, I thought that it has resembled banknotes in Europe. First, we felt it looked like a Dutch guilder note, which was replaced by the euro in 1999. So, we checked it over the Internet. Then, we found that the Dutch note did not look like the new Japanese note. It had a different and colourful design. But it still looked like the Japanese one. It is probably due to the watermark. The Japanese note has a new watermark. This made us feel that it looked like the Dutch note.
We also compared it to the euro banknotes. Again, it seemed to us that they looked like the Japanese one. This was not due to the watermark but to the fonts of the numbers on the notes.
I enjoyed the chat with her. At the end of the talk, I expected to get the note, but not. Instead, she put it in her wallet. It will be a long time before I see the real new note again. I have rarely paid in cash lately, instead, I pay by credit card.
The notes reminded me of a bitter experience in the UK. A few weeks after I began to live in the UK, I went to my bank to withdraw about 500 pounds from my account. I asked the clerk to withdraw the money. Then, I was asked what note I needed for the 500 pounds. But I did not understand what she asked me. I did not understand what she meant by note, and I went blank for a second. Then, she gave me that money with several different kinds of notes.

　先日、初めて新１万円札の実物をみました。自分の部屋にいると、妻がわさわざ部屋に来て見せてくれました。一目見て、ヨーロッパの紙幣に似て来ていると思いました。まず、ユーロに切り替わる前のオランダの通貨・ギルダーの紙幣に似ていると感じました。そこでインターネットで調べてみました。すると、ギルダー紙幣は新1万円札には似ていませんでした。オランダの紙幣は、もっとカラフルなデザインでした。それでも似ているような気がしました。おそらく透かしのせいだと思います。新１万円札には新しい透かしが入っていて、そのせいでオランダの紙幣に似ているように見えたのだと思います。
　ユーロの紙幣とも比較してみました。ここでも、新１万円札は似ていると感じました。これは透かしのせいではなく、紙幣の数字のフォントのせいです。
　妻とのおしゃべりは楽しく、話し終わった後に、新１万円札をもらえると期待したのですが、違っていました。その１万円札は、妻の財布に入ってしまいました。本物の新札を再び目にするのはずっと先のことだと思います。最近は、現金で支払うことはほとんどなく、代わりにクレジットカードを使っているためです。
　この新札を見て、英国での苦い経験を思い出しました。英国に住み始めて数週間後、自分の口座から500ポンドを引き出そうと銀行に行きました。窓口の人に「500ポンドを引き出してください」と頼んだところ、「どの紙幣で欲しい？」と聞かれました。でも、その意味が理解できなかったのです。「note」の意味が分からず、一瞬頭が真っ白になりました。すると、数種類の紙幣で500ポンドを渡してくれました。
