October 9, 2023: Who Are Main Customers? (主なお客さんは誰？)

There is a restaurant near my home. It seems to have run for over thirty years. It was already open when I first moved here. It has been run by a shopkeeper and his wife. It is tiny and does not have many seats, probably about ten. It also does not look attractive from the outside. And as time goes on, it is getting less and less attractive. So it seems to be losing its customers day by day and have no new customer. It is always so deserted that none is aware that it is open if it does not have a restaurant curtain at the front. As far as I can see, it will have to go out of business soon or later. I have sometimes talked about the restaurant with my wife. She has the same opinion as mine and agrees that it will have to do so soon. In a way, it is a big surprise that it has been run for thirty years or more. It has failed to attract customers and has done nothing to improve the business. I do not know if it has tried to change the menu, but it has never been refurbished. Nevertheless, it has still been running. I always wonder how it has run the business and who its main customers are.
Now, please try to find out who are the main customers. For your information, it is located on the main busy street in my town. I can see pachinko parlours, a branch of a bank, a barber shop and a senbei shop on the same side of the road (in order of how close they are to the restaurant). I can also see a Chinese restaurant, a Tengu restaurant, a mobile phone shop and a convenience store on the other side.
It was when I chatted with the owner of a barber shop that I found out who are the main customers. It was a big surprise since I was not expecting customers like them. They come in regularly for a change and mainly for lunch. They order and eat quickly and are in a hurry to get back to where they were.

　私の家の近くにレストランがあります。30年以上続いているようで、ここに引っ越してきたときにはすでに営業していました。店主とその奥さんが切り盛りしています。小さな店で、席数も多くありません。たぶん、10席くらい。外観も魅力がありません。そして時を経るつれて、どんどん魅力が失われてきています。そのため、日に日に寂れ、新しい客も入らないようです。いつも閑散としていて、店の前に暖簾がかかっていなければ、営業していることに誰も気づかないほどです。見ている限り、遅かれ早かれ廃業せざるを得ないだろうと思います。ときどき妻とこのレストランについて話します。彼女も同意見で、いずれはそうせざるを得なくなるだろうと思っています。でもある意味、30年以上も持ったことが驚きです。集客できず、状況改善につながることを何もしてきませんでした。メニューを変えようとしたかどうかはわかりませんが、一度も、改装したことがありません。それでも店は続いているのです。どのように切り盛りしてきたのか、また、主なお客さんはいったいどんな人かといつも思っています。
　さて、主なお客さんはどんな人か考えてみてください。ちなみに、この店はボクの街の人通りが多い、メインストリート沿いにあります。同じ道沿いに、パチンコ屋、銀行の支店、理髪店、せんべい屋が並んでいます（近い順）。反対側には中華料理店、テングのチェーン店、携帯電話ショップ、コンビニエンスストアがあります。
　この店の主なお客さんを知ったのは、散髪屋のマスターと雑談していた時でした。想像していなかったので、聞いたときはびっくりしました。このお客さんたちは、気分転換とお昼がてら、定期的に来店します。すぐに注文して、そそくさと食べて、急いで元の場所に戻ります。
