Maps （地図）
It has been a long time since I stopped looking at maps. When I was young, I love to do so very much. In particular, I loved to look at world maps. I tried to memorise the capitals all over the world. I memorised them in Asia, the Middle East and Europe. I also used to imagine a lot about each area: how people in each area lived; and what would be the difference between Japan and each area. The more I imagined them, the more I was inspired to get out of Japan and live there.
They might all be described by just one word ’a map’, but there are so many different kinds. Some are the detailed ones for a part of some area. Others are for larger areas with no details, such as world maps. World maps are also very different. Japan uses a Pacific-centred map. But Europe uses Europe-centered one. When I looked at the one, I first understood the meaning of the word Far East, an area including Japan. Certainly, Japan was at the right end of the map.
It has been a long time since the word Far East was not in use. It means that the time has changed. The time is now the era of the Pacific.
I also found an interesting map, an upside down one. It seems to be in use in Australia. I do not know exactly how it is used. But it shows that nothing in the world is exactly the same.
久しく、地図を見ていません。若い頃は地図を見るのが大好きでした。特に世界地図を見るのが好きで、世界中の首都を覚えました。アジア、中東、ヨーロッパの首都は全部覚えました。また、それぞれの地域の人々がどのような生活をしているのか、日本と各地域の違いは何なのかと、想像をめぐらしたものです。想像を膨らませれば膨らませるほど、日本を飛び出して、その土地で暮らしたいと思うようになりました。
地図と一言で言っても、その種類は実にさまざまです。ある地域の一部を詳細に記したものもあれば、世界地図のように、詳細はなく、広い範囲のものもあります。また、世界地図もさまざまです。日本では。太平洋が中心の地図を使っています。でも、ヨーロッパは欧州が中心の地図を使っています。この地図を見て、初めて「極東」という言葉の意味が分かりました。確かに、この地図では、日本は右端にあります。
「極東」という言葉が使われなくなって久しいです。時代が変わったということでしょう。今や太平洋の時代ですから。
逆さになった世界地図も見つけました。面白いです。オーストラリアで使われているようです。これがどのように使われているのかは、正確には知りません。でも、世界にはまったく同じものはないということでしょう。
