Dogs can predict and 

understand what we are 

trying to communicate 

just a fraction of a second 

after we start saying 

a word like "treat" or "walk." 

They can also understand 

our tone of voice. 

A new study has shown 

that the average canine 

can respond to 89 words 

consistently. 

Smarter dogs were found to 

comprehend and respond 

to over 200 specific words, 

which is about the 

equivalent of a 

two-year-old human 

child’s vocabulary.

Professional dogs, 

like those trained for 

careers such as the 

police force, 

search and rescue, 

and the military, 

had vocabularies 

1.5 times larger than dogs 

without this training. 

For an animal that 

doesn’t speak words, 

the way many dogs 

understand human 

language is amazing.
