I contributed an article to the Japanese web magazine "Agora," analyzing two pieces of music created for mass games and conducted by their respective composers at the opening ceremonies of the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics and the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. The title is "Back When 'Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence' Graced the Olympic Opening Ceremony". The entire text is in Japanese, but if you'd like to read it in English, it might be possible.

For your information, in my humble opinion, what these two pieces have in common is a melody strongly influenced by Beethoven's "Ode to Joy."
