文化って？

What's culture like?

ふと昔の事を思い出すことがある。
I sometimes remember old memories.

中学１年の時の地理の授業でのこと。
When I was a seventh grade student, it was happened in a geography class.

詳細は忘れたが、ある国では、食事を必ず残す風習があると先生から話があり、その理由は何か生徒に問いかけがあった。
I forgot the detail. A teacher taught us that people in some countries have a custom which they leave meals a little bit. And then, the teacher asked us that reason.

色々な回答が出たと思う。
覚えているのは一人の生徒の回答のみ。
I suppose my classmates answered various opinions.
I just remember one answer.

「料理の豊富さを褒める」
One classmate said "They admire how rich the meal is" .

当時の僕は膝を打ったし、今、思い出してみても素晴らしい回答だと思う。
携帯電話なんて誰も持っていなかったし、インターネットも普及していなかったので、自分の頭で考えないと出てこない答えだろう。
Actually, I praised her answer. And it is a marvelous answer even now.
No one had any mobile phones, and not many people used internet in those days.
I think it was her original answer thought by herself.

最終的な先生の回答は、「そういう文化なんだよ。」
The teacher finally answered "That is their culture".

え？まるで答えになってない。
当時はそれで丸め込まれたけど（笑）
That was not proper answer at all.
I accepted that silly answer at the moment.

どんな文化にも背景がある。
Every culture has their own backgrounds.

例えばこの風習が、ある宗教を崇拝する教徒のもので、経典に載っているから守られているのかもしれない。
その経典には、なんらかの理由が記されているかもしれない。
調べてみると、中国ではお腹がいっぱいですと示すために料理を残すらしい。
For instance, that custom might be written in a scripture.
That reason might be written in the scripture as well.
I searched the Internet for the custom. In China, they leave meals in order to show they get full.

今、学校の授業を受けたらどうなるだろうか？
超めんどくさいと先生から思われるだろうな（笑）
Now, what would be happened if I attend the class at school?
I would be definitely worried by teachers lol.
