大学教員になるには。（つづき）

　

　いよいよオリンピックが始まりますが、みなさんいかがお過ごしでしょうか。私は見るテレビ番組がないので読書タイムにしようと思います。

　さて、前期授業もそろそろ終わりに近づき学生たちはレポートや試験のことで話題が持ち切りといった感じです。私も試験の準備をしなければいけないので、何となく落ち着きません。

　そんな中、大学教員の知り合いから次の仕事についての相談を受けました。その人は有期雇用なのでいずれ次のことを考えないといけないのですが、急な予算削減と上層部の意見相違のため早めに次のところに移りたいとのことでした。

　私もJREC-IN（https://jrecin.jst.go.jp/seek/SeekTop）は毎日チェックしていますが、最近の公募は３年の有期雇用があって、その後無期雇用になるかどうか審査の上判断するというパターンが多いような気がします。３年間勤めて確実に無期雇用になればいいのですが、大学によっては端から有期雇用ありきで採用するところもあります。実際、私の知り合いは５年間の有期雇用なのですが、その後の雇用について大学は検討すると本人には伝えていたようです。しかし、実際には５年を目途にして徐々に予算が削減されていき、他を探さざるを得ない状況になっているとのことでした。

　仮に無期雇用で採用されても近年は定年退職の時期がどんどん早まっています。さらに少子化が追い打ちをかけて大学経営は今後ますます厳しくなってきています。このような状況を考えると無期雇用で採用された大学教員も決して安泰というわけではありません。さらには、今大学の経営権を握っているのは定年間近の教員達なので、大きなチャレンジをしようという発想に乏しいようです。恐らくこのまま勝ち逃げすることを狙っているのではないでしょうか。（これは大学だけでなく、日本社会全体に言えることだと思いますが。）

　このように非常に難しいかじ取りを強いられる大学経営がこれからどうなっていくのかを考えると自分の将来が暗くなってしまいます。そんな厳しい環境にみなさんをお誘いすることが本当によいことなのか躊躇することが多い今日この頃です。他の業界であれば、会社が気にいらないからそこから飛び出して新しいことを始めるということができるかもしれません。先日ゲストお招きした方も、とある有名な企業の専属デザイナーでしたが今はフリーランスとして活躍されています。「デザインを通じて多くの人を喜ばせたいから独立した。」という言葉がとても印象的でした。

　ところが、大学教員が独立したら恐らく仕事はほとんどないと思います。たまに「元○○大学教授」という表現でテレビに出ている人を見かけたりすることもありますが、非常に稀ですね。こう考えると大学教員は大学という看板がないと生きていけないのがさだめかもしれません。議員も「選挙に落ちればただの人。」と言われますので、大学教員も議員と同じ境遇のような気がします。

　それでも大学教員を目指すには、自分の実現したい目標は何かを常に考える必要があると思います。私は自分の研究に没頭することと、これから社会を担う次世代育成が当面の目標です。

　これから大学教員になる人には、大学教員になれば決してバラ色の世界が広がっていると思い込まないでほしいと思います。どちらかというイバラの道だと思ってもらった方がいいでしょう。しかし、そんな美しいバラを集めたバラ園をつくれるのも大学教員に特権だと私は思います。そんな自分だけが楽しめる世界に浸れる大学教員を目指してみてはいかがでしょうか。

 The Olympics is finally starting. How is everyone doing? I don't have any TV programs to watch, so I think I'll have a reading time.

 Well, the first semester is almost over, and the students seem to be talking all about their papers and exams. I have to prepare for the exam, so I don't feel comfortable.

 In the meantime, I received a consultation about my next job from an acquaintance of a university teacher. Since he is a fixed-term employee, he has to think about the following, but due to a sudden budget cut and a disagreement at the top, he wants to move to the next place early.

 I also check the JREC-IN (https://jrecin.jst.go.jp/seek/SeekTop) every day, but I think there are many patterns of recent open recruitment where there are 3 years of fixed-term employment, and after that, it is decided whether or not to become a permanent employment after examination. It would be good if you work for 3 years and become a permanent employee for sure, but some universities hire students based on the fixed term employment. Actually, my acquaintance is a fixed-term employee for 5 years, but he told him that the university would consider the employment after that. In reality, however, the budget has been gradually reduced after about five years, and the situation is that we have no choice but to look elsewhere.

 Even if you are hired as a permanent employee, the retirement age is getting earlier and faster in recent years. In addition, the declining birthrate is putting the strain on university management. In light of this situation, university teachers hired as permanent employees are not necessarily safe. Furthermore, it seems that the teachers who hold the management right of the university are close to the retirement age, so they lack the idea of taking on a big challenge. Probably they are aiming to win and run like this. (I think this applies not only to universities but also to Japanese society as a whole.)

 When I think about the future of university management, which is so difficult to steer, my future is bleak. Today, I am often hesitant whether it is really a good thing to invite you to such a harsh environment. In other industries, you may be able to jump out of the company and start something new because you don't like it. The person I invited the other day was an exclusive designer for a famous company, but now he works as a freelancer. The word "I became independent because I wanted to make many people happy through design." was very impressive.

 However, if a university teacher becomes independent, there will probably be little work. Sometimes I see people who appear on TV with the expression "former professor of XX university", but it is very rare. If you think about it this way, it may be wrong that university teachers can't live without a university sign. Since Diet members are also called "If you lose the election, you're just a person." I feel that university teachers are in the same situation as Diet members.

 However, in order to become a university teacher, I think you need to always think about what your goal is. My immediate goal is to devote myself to my research and to nurture the next generation that will be responsible for society.

 I don't want people who are going to become university teachers to think that a rosy world is spreading. It's better to think that it's a thorny road. However, I think it is a privilege for university teachers to build a rose garden with such beautiful roses. Why don't you aim to be a university teacher who can immerse yourself in a world that only you can enjoy?
