南河内郡で知った「ユッカ（糸蘭）」の重い歴史はカリブから始まっていた。

202501115 歴史を語る「ユッカ（糸蘭）」に、何故か、歴史深い南河内郡太子町で突然にして偶然出会いました。各国語で「ユッカ(Yucca)」と呼び習わされていますが、 その語源は歴史的にややこしいです。昔、カリブ地方のタイノ語で 使われていたキャッサバを意味するYuca と言う言葉を、ヨーロッパ人が勘違えて、この花（糸蘭）の名前と思い、その後この言葉はヨーロッパに持ち込まれ、その際、発音が変化し、「Yucca」となりました。しかし、ヨーロッパ人による中南米植民地化のため、疫病の蔓延、強制労働、虐殺などにより、タイノ族は殆ど消滅した様です。ハリケーン (hurricane)、タバコ (tobacco)、カヌー (canoe) などはタイノ語由来との事。何やら歴史の重苦しい側面を感じます。

I unexpectedly and coincidentally encountered a yucca (thread-leaf yucca) in the historically significant town of Taishi-Cho, Minamikawachi-Gun, Osaka-Fu. While known as "yucca" in various european languages, its etymology has a complex history. The word originates from "yuca," a Taíno word (from the Caribbean) that referred to cassava. Europeans mistakenly applied this name to the flower (thread-leaf yucca), and the term was subsequently introduced to Europe, where its pronunciation evolved into "yucca." Tragically, due to European colonisation of Central and South America, including the spread of diseases, forced labour, and massacres, the Taíno people were nearly wiped out. Words like "hurricane," "tobacco," and "canoe" are also derived from Taíno. This history carries a heavy weight.

In der historisch bedeutsamen Gemeinde Taishi-Cho, Minamikawachi-Gun, Osaka-Fu, bin ich unerwartet und zufällig auf eine Yucca (Fadenblatt-Yucca) gestoßen. Das Wort „Yucca“ ist zwar in verschiedenen europäischen Sprachen bekannt, seine Etymologie hat jedoch eine vielschichtige Geschichte. Das Wort stammt von "yuca“, einem Taíno-Wort (aus der Karibik), das sich auf Maniok bezog. Die Europäer wendeten diesen Namen fälschlicherweise auf die Blume (fadenförmige Yucca) an, woraufhin der Begriff nach Europa eingeführt wurde, wo sich seine Aussprache zu „Yucca“ wandelte. Tragischerweise wurde das Volk der Taíno durch die europäische Kolonisierung Mittel- und Südamerikas, einschließlich der Verbreitung von Krankheiten, Zwangsarbeit und Massakern, fast ausgestorben. Wörter wie „Hurrikan“, „Tabak“ und „Kanu“ stammen ebenfalls von den Taíno ab. Diese Geschichte hat ein schweres Gewicht.

Dans la commune historiquement importante de Taishi-Cho, Minamikawachi-Gun, Osaka-Fu, je suis tombé de manière inattendue et fortuite sur un yucca (yucca à feuilles filiformes). Le mot « yucca » est certes connu dans différentes langues européennes, mais son étymologie a une histoire plus complexe. Le mot vient de « yuca », un mot taïno (des Caraïbes) qui faisait référence au cassave. Les Européens ont appliqué à tort ce nom à la fleur (yucca filiforme), après quoi le terme a été introduit en Europe, où sa prononciation s'est transformée en « yucca ». Plus tragiquement, la colonisation européenne de l'Amérique centrale et du Sud, y compris la propagation de maladies, le travail forcé et les massacres, a failli entraîner l'extinction du peuple Taïnos. Des mots comme « hurricane “, ” tabac “ et ” canoë » proviennent également du peuple Taíno. Cette histoire pèse lourd.
