What is “Namushi-Chouto-Naru”?
"Namushi-Chouto-Naru" refers to the process where a chrysalis, having survived the harsh winter, gains new life and transforms into a beautiful butterfly. This transformation typically occurs around March 15th to March 19th every year. A caterpillar, in this context, is a type of green worm that attaches to the leaves of plants like rapeseed and radishes.
Until it becomes a cabbage butterfly
The lifecycle of the cabbage butterfly begins at the caterpillar stage. These larvae lay their tiny eggs on plants of the Brassicaceae family, which hatch after 3 to 5 days. The hatched larvae eat a lot of leaves and grow, going through a period of nutritional accumulation for 9 to 11 days before transforming into a chrysalis. The chrysalis stage lasts about 5 to 10 days from spring to autumn, but during the cold winter months, it overwinters and metamorphoses into a butterfly the following spring.
What is the powder that sticks to your hands?
When you catch a butterfly, fine powder may adhere to your hands from its wings. This powder is called "scales," and though it appears as mere powder to the naked eye, under a microscope, it resembles the shape of scales. These scales are essential for the butterfly's flight, reducing air resistance and repelling water due to their textured structure.
