Starting from June 10th, the traditional Japanese calendar marks the period known as "Kusaretaru Kusa Hotaru to Naru," which translates to "Fireflies Emerging from Decayed Grass." This term is one of the seventy-two micro-seasons (Shichijūni-kō) that reflect subtle changes in nature. During this period, it was believed that fireflies were born from the decay of grass, transforming from larvae into the beautiful glowing insects we admire today. This poetic expression symbolizes the cycle of life and the beauty that can emerge from decay.


「腐草為蛍（くされたるくさほたるとなる）」の現象

6月10日から、伝統的な日本の暦では「腐草為蛍（くされたるくさほたるとなる）」と呼ばれる期間が始まります。この言葉は、自然の微妙な変化を反映する七十二侯の一つです。この時期には、ホタルが枯れた草から生まれ、幼虫から美しい光る昆虫へと変態するという信仰がありました。この詩的な表現は、生命のサイクルと、腐敗から生まれる美しさを象徴しています。

The Lifecycle of Fireflies

Fireflies undergo a fascinating lifecycle. They start as eggs laid in moist soil or near water. The larvae, which resemble tiny worms, live in the soil or under bark, feeding on snails and other small creatures. After several months, the larvae enter the pupal stage, transforming within a cocoon. Finally, they emerge as adult fireflies, ready to light up the night with their enchanting glow. This transformation from humble beginnings to radiant adulthood is mirrored in the saying "fireflies emerging from decayed grass."
