Śūraṅgama Mantra English Translation

I

Salutations to all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas.
Salutations to the seven hundred billion perfectly awakened Buddhas and their community of disciples.
Salutations to the Arhats in the world.
Salutations to those who have entered the stream (Srotāpannas).
Salutations to those who will return once (Sakṛdāgāmins).
Salutations to those who will not return (Anāgāmins).
Salutations to those in the world who have reached the true path and those who are progressing correctly.
Salutations to the divine sages.
Salutations to the accomplished sages who possess wisdom and powers, who are capable of granting blessings and removing curses.
Salutations to Brahma. Salutations to Indra.
Salutations to the revered Rudra, who is accompanied by Umā.
Salutations to the revered Nārāyaṇa, who is honored by Lakṣmī and the five great seals.
Salutations to the revered Mahākāla, who causes the destruction of the city of Tripura, who resides in the cremation grounds, and who is honored by the hosts of mothers.
Salutations to the revered ones of the Tathāgata family.
Salutations to the revered ones of the Padma family.
Salutations to the revered ones of the Vajra family.
Salutations to the revered ones of the Jewel family.
Salutations to the revered ones of the Elephant family.
Salutations to the revered Dṛḍha-śūra-sena, the king of the strong and brave army, who is a Tathāgata, Arhat, and perfectly awakened Buddha.
Salutations to the revered Amitābha, the Tathāgata, Arhat, and perfectly awakened Buddha.
Salutations to the revered Akṣobhya, the Tathāgata, Arhat, and perfectly awakened Buddha.
Salutations to the revered Bhaiṣajya-guru-vaiḍūrya-prabha, the king of medicine, the Tathāgata, Arhat, and perfectly awakened Buddha.
Salutations to the revered Saṃpuṣpita-sālendra, the king of fully blossomed trees, the Tathāgata, Arhat, and perfectly awakened Buddha.
Salutations to the revered Śākyamuni, the Tathāgata, Arhat, and perfectly awakened Buddha.
Salutations to the revered Ratna-kusuma-ketu, the king adorned with jeweled flowers, the Tathāgata, Arhat, and perfectly awakened Buddha.
Having paid homage to them, I now bow to the revered Tathāgata’s crown, the white parasol, the undefeated Pratyaṅgirā.
She subdues all beings and spirits.
She cuts through all opposing knowledge.
She protects from untimely death.
She grants freedom from all bonds.
She removes all evil and bad dreams.
She destroys the thousands of evil spirits.
She destroys the twenty-eight constellations.
She removes all enemies.
She destroys terrible nightmares.
She averts poison, weapons, and fire.
The undefeated, greatly terrifying one,
The greatly powerful, fierce, blazing, and brilliant one,
The great white, flaming, powerful one residing in the Pāṇḍara family,
The noble Tārā, fierce and victorious, known as Vajra-mālā,
With a lotus-marked tongue and adorned with a garland,
Holding a vajra staff, revered by the vast host of gods,
Gentle in form, the great white one,
The noble Tārā, greatly powerful, with another vajra chain,
The vajra maiden, bearer of the family,
Holding a vajra, the greatly wise one with a golden garland,
With the adornments of flowers and jewels, residing in the Vairocana family,
Expanding the crown with the vajra radiance,
The vajra-billed white one with lotus eyes and moonlight radiance,
These are the seals, may they all protect me and all sentient beings.

II

Oṃ, homage to the assembly of sages, to the crown of all Tathāgatas.
Hūṃ trūṃ.
The one who paralyzes: Hūṃ trūṃ.
The one who immobilizes: Hūṃ trūṃ.
The one who bewilders: Hūṃ trūṃ.
The one who churns: Hūṃ trūṃ.
The one who devours all opposing knowledge: Hūṃ trūṃ.
The one who immobilizes all evil ones: Hūṃ trūṃ.
The one who destroys all yakṣas, rākṣasas, and spirits: Hūṃ trūṃ.
The one who destroys the eighty-four thousand evil spirits: Hūṃ trūṃ.
The one who propitiates the twenty-eight constellations: Hūṃ trūṃ.
The one who destroys the eight great planets: Hūṃ trūṃ.
Protect, protect me.
O Blessed One, Tathāgata's crown,
White parasol, great vajra crown,
Great Pratyaṅgirā, with a thousand arms and thousand heads,
With hundreds of thousands of eyes, unbreakable blazing armor,
Great vajra circle of the three worlds.
Oṃ, may there be auspiciousness for me and mine.

III

Fear from kings, fear from thieves, fear from water, fear from fire,
fear from poison, fear from weapons, fear from enemy armies, fear from famine,
fear from lightning, fear from untimely death,
fear from earthquakes, fear from meteor strikes,
fear from royal punishment, fear from great birds, fear from serpents, fear from lightning.

From planetary deities, serpent deities, yakṣa deities, rākṣasa deities,
preta deities, piśāca deities, bhūta deities, kumbhāṇḍa deities,
pūtana deities, kaṭapūtana deities, skanda deities, apasmāra deities,
madness deities, shadow deities, revati deities, jamika deities,
throat-stealing deities.

From those that steal vitality, those that steal embryos, those that steal the born, those that steal life,
those that steal blood, those that steal fat, those that steal flesh, those that steal marrow,
those that steal bone, those that steal excretions, those that steal impurities, those that steal hair,
all of them.

I cut off and pin down the knowledge of all these deities.
I cut off and pin down the knowledge made by wanderers.
I cut off and pin down the knowledge made by Ḍāka and Ḍākinī.
I cut off and pin down the knowledge made by the great Paśupati Rudra.
I cut off and pin down the knowledge made by Nārāyaṇa with the five great seals.
I cut off and pin down the knowledge made by the powerful Garuḍa.
I cut off and pin down the knowledge made by Mahākāla and the mother goddesses.
I cut off and pin down the knowledge made by Kāpālika.
I cut off and pin down the knowledge made by the victorious bees, fulfilling all purposes.
I cut off and pin down the knowledge made by the four sisters and the five brothers.
I cut off and pin down the knowledge made by Bhṛṅgi, Riṭika, Nandi-keśvara, and Gaṇapati.
I cut off and pin down the knowledge made by naked ascetics.
I cut off and pin down the knowledge made by Arhats.
I cut off and pin down the knowledge made by those free from passion.
I cut off and pin down the knowledge made by Vajrapāṇi, the chief of the Guhyakas.
Protect, protect me.

IV

Homage to the Blessed One, the Tathāgata, and the white parasol. I bow to you.
To the brilliant parasol radiating the splendor of dark fire and the sun.
Blaze, blaze, burn, burn, consume, consume, tear, tear, split, split, cut, cut, break, break, hūṃ hūṃ phaṭ! phaṭ! svāhā.
Hehe phaṭ. Infallible phaṭ. Unhindered phaṭ. Bestower of boons phaṭ.
Frightener of demons phaṭ. To all gods phaṭ. To all nāgas phaṭ.
To all yakṣas phaṭ. To all rākṣasas phaṭ.
To all garuḍas phaṭ. To all gandharvas phaṭ.
To all asuras phaṭ. To all kinnaras phaṭ.
To all great serpents phaṭ. To all humans phaṭ.
To all non-humans phaṭ. To all spirits phaṭ.
To all piśācas phaṭ. To all kumbhāṇḍas phaṭ.
To all pūtanas phaṭ. To all kaṭapūtanas phaṭ.
To all difficult-to-transcend ones phaṭ. To all difficult-to-perceive ones phaṭ.
To all fevers phaṭ. To all epilepsy phaṭ.
To all ascetics phaṭ. To all tīrthikas (heretics) phaṭ.
To all madness phaṭ. To all kings of vidyās (mantras) and teachers phaṭ.
To the victorious bees, fulfilling all purposes, phaṭ.
To all mantra teachers phaṭ. To the four sisters phaṭ.
To Vajra Kaumārī, bearer of the family, great mantra kings phaṭ.
To the great Pratyaṅgirā phaṭ. To Vajra Śaṅkalā phaṭ.
To the king of the great Pratyaṅgirā phaṭ.
To Mahākāla and the honored host of mother goddesses phaṭ.
To those devoted to Viṣṇu phaṭ. To those devoted to Brahma phaṭ.
To those devoted to Agni phaṭ. To the great Kālī phaṭ.
To Kāla-daṇḍī phaṭ. To Indrī phaṭ. To Raudrī phaṭ.
To Cāmuṇḍī phaṭ. To Kāla-rātrī phaṭ. To Kāpālī phaṭ.
To the devoted one who resides in the cremation ground phaṭ.
To all sentient beings who have good intentions towards me.

V

Malicious-minded, sinful-minded, fierce-minded, hateful, unfriendly-minded ones.
They cause, bind, chant, recite mantras, offer oblations.
Stealers of vitality, stealers of embryos, stealers of blood, stealers of fat,
stealers of marrow, stealers of birth, stealers of life, stealers of impurities,
stealers of scent, stealers of flowers, stealers of fruits, stealers of crops.
Sinful-minded, malicious-minded, fierce-minded ones.
Yakṣa graha, rākṣasa graha, preta graha, piśāca graha,
bhūta graha, kumbhāṇḍa graha, skanda graha, madness graha,
shadow graha, epilepsy graha, ḍāka and ḍākinī graha,
revati graha, jamika graha, śakuni graha, mantra-nandika graha,
lamvika graha, hanu kaṇṭha-pāṇi graha.
Fever: one-day, two-day, three-day, four-day.
Chronic fever, irregular fever, caused by vāta, caused by pitta,
caused by phlegm, caused by combination, all fevers.
Headache, half-head pain, loss of appetite,
eye disease, nose disease, mouth disease, heart disease, throat obstruction,
ear pain, tooth pain, heart pain, vital point pain,
side pain, back pain, stomach pain, throat pain,
bladder pain, thigh pain, calf pain, hand pain,
foot pain, pain in all parts and limbs.
Ghosts, vetāḍa, ḍāka and ḍākinī fever.
Eczema, itching, scabs, ulcers, snake bites,
boils, sores, poisonous afflictions,
fire, water, death, enemies, forest, untimely death.
Tigers, three-striped animals, scorpions, snakes, mongooses,
lions, tigers, bears, wolves, deer,
own and others' lives, all of these.
Under the white parasol, great vajra crown, great Pratyaṅgirā.
Within a distance of twelve yojanas,
I create a boundary, I create a directional boundary,
I create a boundary of superior knowledge, I create a boundary of energy,
I create a boundary for the hands, I create a boundary for the feet,
I create a boundary for all parts and limbs.
As follows: Oṃ, O pure one, O pure one, O heroic vajra-holder,
bind, bind, vajra-wielder, phaṭ! hūṃ trūṃ phaṭ! svāhā.
Homage to the Tathāgata, the Well-Gone One, the Arhat, the Perfectly Enlightened One,
may the mantra's words be accomplished, svāhā.
