おれは質屋に入った。
どうしても現金が必要だったからだ。

「おや、先生。いらっしゃい」
質屋の主とは顔なじみだった。

「じつは、相談なんだが」
おれは主の目をまともに見ることができなかった。

「なにか売りたいのだが、なにも売るものがないのだ」

母親は、少し前に売ってしまった。
すでに父親は、売る前に亡くなっている。

妹はいるが、これは売るわけにはいかない。
その妹の薬代のために金がいるのだから。

「それは困りましたね」
「なんとかならないかな」

主はおれの顔をまじまじと見る。

「先生は、たしか絵が描けましたよね」
「ああ。そこそこ描けるが、絵が売れるのか？」

「いいえ。近頃、なかなか絵は売れません」
「そうだろうな」

「絵に買い手はつきませんが、絵を描く才能なら」
「なに？ 才能が売れるのか？」

「売れます」
「いくらくらいになる？」

「ちょっと先生、これに描いてみてください」
チラシを裏返して、ボールペンと一緒に渡された。

その白紙にさらさらと、主の似顔絵を描く。
久しぶりだったが、なかなか上手に描けた気がする。

「これはまた、うまいもんですね」
「いくらになる？」

主は電卓のキーを叩いた。
「こんなところですね」

なかなかの金額だった。
迷うことはない。

「よし。売った！」

それで商談成立。
現金を手に入れると、おれはそのまま薬局へ向かった。

「お兄ちゃん。ありがとう」
薬を飲みながら妹が礼を言う。

だが、おれはあまり嬉しくなかった。

妹の様子がおかしいのだ。
いつもと違う。

なぜだろう。
妹の顔が、あまりかわいらしく見えなかった。

しばらくして、おれはやっと気づいた。

やれやれ。
絵を描く才能を失うとは、こういうことか。

Pawn Shop Anything

He turned the flyer over and handed me with a ballpoint pen.

I draw a sketch of the shop owner on the blank sheet.

"How much will it cost?"

The shopkeeper hit the calculator key.

It was a fair amount of money.

"Good. I sold!"

When I got cash, I went straight to the pharmacy.

"My brother. Thank you."
My sister says thanks while taking medicine.

But I was not very happy.

My sister's appearance is strange.
She is different from usual.

Why?
My sister's face didn't look very cute.
