【怪談】エレベーター

目の前で扉が左右に開いた。
ひとり、灰色のエレベーターに乗る。

狭くて殺風景な直方体の箱。
振り返ると、そこは長方形の闇。

そして、ヒステリックな靴音が響く。
闇の中から誰かが駆けてくるのだ。

あわてて操作パネルのボタンを押した。
見知らぬ女の姿が、闇の奥から現われる。

「閉めないで！　お願いだから閉めないで！」

そう叫ぶ女の目の前で扉は閉まる。
扉越しに、扉を叩く音と叫び声が聞こえてくる。

「開けて！　開けて！　開けて！」

不安になる。
扉が開くかもしれない。

もし扉が開いたら、あの女の目が恐ろしい。
箱の中では、もう逃げることなどできないのだ。

しかし、エレベーターは静かに下降を始めた。
思わずニヤリと笑う。

（これで安心だ）

速度を加えながら、下へ下へと落ちてゆく。
操作パネルのボタンに目をやる余裕さえできた。

（はて、どのボタンを押したのだろう）
あわてたから、見もせず適当に押してしまった。

だが、ボタンの数はごくわずかだった。

『天国』と、『地獄』と････！
