教養英語演習（001）

一般教養を学べるやさしめの英文を使って総合的な英語学習をします。最終的には課題文を「復文」して暗唱していくといいでしょう。

今回の課題文はこちらです。

Socrates

Socrates was an ancient Greek philosopher. He is respected as a brilliant thinker and teacher with a great thirst for knowledge. Along with two other Greek philosophers, Aristotle and Plato, Socrates is remembered for developing ideas and thoughts that led to the Western culture that exists today.

いま尊敬されているので現在時制です。with a great thirst for knowledgeは前の名詞a brilliant thinker and teacherを修飾しています。ここは〈X A and B Y〉型の構造になっています（共通関係）。

brilliantもwith以下も，thinkerとteacher両方を修飾しています。

Along with two other Greek philosophers, Aristotle and Plato, Socrates is remembered for developing ideas and thoughts that led to the Western culture that exists today.

along withはwithとほぼ同じ意味だと考えて問題ありません。

two other Greek philosophersとAristotle and Platoは「同格」の関係です。

is remembered for…のforはbe famous for Aのforと同じで「原因・理由」を表しています。

that led to the Western cultureは関係代名詞節で，先行詞はideas and thoughtsです。また，A lead to Bは「AはBにつながる」の訳語で覚えておきます。

that exists todayは関係代名詞節で，先行詞はthe Western cultureです。
